What Is ISO 29001 Certification?
ISO 29001 certification is independent confirmation that a supplier's quality management system meets the 2020 edition. The standard covers organizations that design, make, install, or service products for the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries. It contains all of ISO 9001:2015 plus sector requirements, so one audit proves both. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.
Operators use it to qualify vendors whose failures could stop production, cause a leak, or harm people. The sector requirements focus on risk, competence, inspection planning, and control of outsourced work.
The audit looks at where the work happens. We visit workshops and yards, follow real orders, and check field service records against customer requirements.
The 2020 Edition and Its Link to API
The 2020 edition is the one you certify to. ISO published it in May 2020. It replaced the technical specification ISO/TS 29001:2010 and was aligned with ISO 9001:2015.
It mirrors API's earlier specifications. ISO's oil and gas committee, ISO/TC 67, wrote it to be technically equivalent to API Spec Q1 9th edition and API Spec Q2 1st edition. API Q1 has since moved to its 10th edition, effective 18 September 2024, and only API registers to it.
A 2024 amendment added climate change. Like other ISO management system standards, it now asks whether climate change is relevant to your context. ISO 9001:2026 is now published. If the sector standard is revised to match, we will plan the transition into your audit cycle.

A QSL is a level of quality control set according to risk. Customers use QSLs to decide how much inspection, testing and documentation they require from a supplier for a given product.
Can I move from ISO 9001 to ISO 29001?
Yes. Many suppliers upgrade from ISO 9001 when operators ask for sector certification. The audit focuses on the extra sector requirements, and an upgrade can often be timed with a surveillance or recertification audit.
How long does ISO 29001 certification take?
Most suppliers with a working quality system certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Several sites, field operations, or a new system take longer.
How much does ISO 29001 certification cost?
