ISO Certification in South Korea: Accredited Audits for Chip Suppliers, Shipyards, Battery Makers, and Software Firms
ISO certification in South Korea gives parts suppliers evidence for global customers, helps yards and plants document safety duties, and answers security reviews for software exporters. Accredify Global audits Korean organizations against ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, and the rest of our UAF scope. The first step is a free scoping review.
What ISO Certification in South Korea Proves to Customers
ISO certification in South Korea means an accredited certification body has checked your management system against an international standard and found it working in practice. Auditors read your records, talk to staff on each shift, and walk the fab, yard, plant, or office. A conforming system receives a three-year certificate, confirmed by a surveillance audit every year.
Korean industry runs on tiered supply chains. A memory or display maker in Gyeonggi buys from hundreds of equipment, chemical, and parts suppliers. Each tier is asked for ISO 9001 before onboarding, and many are now asked for ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 as well.
Heavy industry adds safety pressure. Shipyards in Ulsan and Geoje, steelworks in Pohang and Gwangyang, and machinery plants in Changwon employ large subcontractor crews. Since the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, boards want a documented safety system that an outside auditor has tested.
Exporters of batteries, auto parts, and steel face a third trigger. European customers ask about energy use and carbon data, and the EU carbon border rules now reach steel and aluminium. ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 give plants in Ochang, Ulsan, and Pohang a structured way to collect that data.
Software is the fourth driver. Game studios and SaaS firms in Pangyo Techno Valley and Seoul sell to clients in Japan, the United States, and Europe. Those clients send security questionnaires, and an ISO 27001 certificate answers most of them in one document.
Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is listed in its directory. The Korea Accreditation Board (KAB) is the national accreditation body. If a tender or customer names KAB, send us the clause before you book and we will confirm the fit.
Korean Rules in 2026 That Shape Certification Requests
Privacy penalties rose again in 2026. The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) is enforced by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC). Since September 2023, fines can reach 3% of total turnover. An amendment passed on 12 February 2026 adds fines of up to 10% for repeat offences, breaches affecting over 10 million people, or ignored corrective orders.
Breaches must be handled fast. Controllers must tell affected people within 72 hours of learning of a breach. A report to the PIPC or KISA is also due when 1,000 or more people are affected, sensitive data is involved, or systems were hacked. Under the Network Act, ICT service providers report security incidents to the Ministry of Science and ICT or KISA within 24 hours.
AI rules are now in force. The Framework Act on the Development of Artificial Intelligence and the Creation of a Foundation for Trust took effect on 22 January 2026. It sets risk management and user notice duties for high-impact AI. The Ministry of Science and ICT has announced a one-year grace period before sanctions are actively enforced.

Standards Korean Customers and Buyers Request
Each customer writes its own supplier manual, but these pairings come up most often in Korea.
| Sector | What the buyer worries about | Usual standards |
|---|---|---|
| Semiconductor equipment, materials, and parts suppliers | Process control, contamination, and change management | ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 |
| Shipbuilders and marine subcontractors in Ulsan, Geoje, and Busan | Yard accidents and owner inspections | ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 |
| Battery cell and EV component makers | Energy, carbon, and quality data for overseas automakers | ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001 |
| Steel, refining, and petrochemical plants in Pohang, Gwangyang, and Yeosu | Emissions trading, energy cost, and process safety | ISO 50001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 |
| Game studios, SaaS, and cloud firms in Pangyo and Seoul | Security reviews from foreign clients | ISO 27001, ISO 27701, and ISO 20000-1 |
| Medical device makers in Wonju, Daegu, and Seoul | Device quality for export registrations | ISO 13485 |
| Packaged food and K-food exporters | Food safety for overseas retailers | ISO 22000 and HACCP |
| AI model and platform developers | High-impact AI duties and enterprise due diligence | ISO 42001 |
MFDS HACCP designation for food and KGMP for medical devices are national programs run by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. ISO 22000 and ISO 13485 support them but do not replace them.
Second- and third-tier suppliers benefit most. A precision parts maker in Ansan or Siheung may face three customer audits a year, each with its own checklist. One certified system gives every customer the same audited baseline. Customer auditors can then spend their visit on product-specific risks rather than basic document control. The same logic applies to subcontractors working inside a shipyard, where the yard owner must show that every crew follows a safety system.
How ISO Supports Korean Legal and Customer Duties
A certificate is not a permit or a legal defence. It is the management system that keeps controls running between inspections and customer audits.
| Rule or system | Who it reaches | How ISO supports it |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) | Every controller and processor of personal data | ISO 27701 runs privacy duties; ISO 27001 secures the data |
| Network Act incident reporting | ICT service providers | ISO 27001 builds the incident process behind a 24-hour report |
| ISMS-P (KISA national scheme) | Large ICT providers now, larger controllers from 1 July 2027 | ISO 27001 controls overlap; ISMS-P remains a separate certification |
| Serious Accidents Punishment Act | Employers with five or more workers since January 2024 | ISO 45001 gives a tested safety and health system with records |
| AI Framework Act | Developers and deployers of high-impact AI | ISO 42001 sets AI risk, impact, and oversight processes |
| KONEPS public tenders | Firms bidding through the Public Procurement Service | Certificates support technical and quality evaluation |
Some duties call for testing rather than certification. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. Firms with US clients can add SOC 2 support, and exporters handling European customer data can use our GDPR and compliance services. Accredify Global does not issue ISMS-P certificates, which only bodies designated under the Korean scheme can grant.

FAQ: ISO Certification in South Korea
Answers on PIPA, ISMS-P, the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, AI rules, cost, and timing.
How do I get ISO certification in South Korea?
Pick the standard your customer manual or tender names. Run the system for long enough to produce records, including an internal audit and a management review. Then book Stage 1 and Stage 2 with an accredited body, which issues a three-year certificate if you conform.
How long does ISO certification take in South Korea?
A plant or office with a working system usually certifies 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. Several sites, combined standards, or a brand-new system take longer.
How much does ISO certification cost in South Korea?
We do not publish a price list. The fee depends on audit man-days, which follow headcount, shifts, sites, risk level, and the number of standards.
Is Accredify Global accredited?
Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, among them ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001.
Is ISO 27001 the same as ISMS-P?
No. ISMS-P is a Korean national certification run by KISA, with added personal data criteria. ISO 27001 is the international standard most foreign clients ask for. The controls overlap, so many firms run one system and hold both.
Will ISMS-P become mandatory for us?
The 2026 PIPA amendment makes ISMS-P mandatory from 1 July 2027 for controllers above thresholds set by enforcement decree. The thresholds consider turnover and the scale of personal data processing. Large ICT providers were already required to hold ISMS certification.
How fast must a data breach be reported in South Korea?
Affected people must be told within 72 hours of learning of the breach. A report to the PIPC or KISA is required when 1,000 or more people are affected, sensitive or unique identifiers are involved, or systems were hacked.
How high can PIPA fines go?
Since September 2023 the cap is 3% of total turnover, excluding unrelated revenue. The 2026 amendment allows up to 10% for repeat violations, breaches of over 10 million people, or ignored corrective orders.
Does ISO 45001 protect us under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act?
No certificate is a legal defence. ISO 45001 does give you the elements the Act expects, such as hazard identification, worker consultation, and contractor control, plus an outside check that they work.
Does ISO 42001 help with the AI Framework Act?
It helps. ISO 42001 sets up risk assessment, impact assessment, human oversight, and documentation for AI systems. Those processes support the duties the Act places on high-impact AI.
Can our documents stay in Korean?
Yes. Records can stay in Korean. The proposal states the audit language and whether interpretation is needed, so plan for it in the timeline.
Do public tenders on KONEPS require a KAB-accredited certificate?
Some do, many do not. Requirements differ by agency and bid. Share the tender wording with us before you book and we will confirm whether our certificate fits.
Can one certificate cover our Korean headquarters and plants abroad?
Yes, if all sites run one management system under the same organization. Plants in Vietnam, China, or Mexico can be listed and sampled over the cycle.
Can audits be done remotely?
Document review and some interviews can be remote where the rules allow. Fabs, yards, and plants are audited in person, and we agree time windows that suit Korean office hours.
Will Accredify Global write our procedures?
No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your own team or an independent consultant builds the system.
