ISO 9001:2026: What Changed, the Transition Deadlines, and How to Move Your Certificate
The new edition of ISO 9001 is an update, not a rewrite. But the transition dates are now fixed, and every ISO 9001:2015 certificate has to move before 30 September 2029.
A quality manager opens an email from a key customer: "Please confirm your plan for ISO 9001:2026." Her certificate is valid until 2028. Her team has just finished a clean surveillance audit. Does she need to start again?
No. ISO 9001:2026 keeps the structure and most of the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. What it adds is a clearer focus on leadership, quality culture, ethics, risk and change. This guide explains each change, the official transition dates, and how to move your certificate without a second full audit.
Quick answer: ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 and replaces ISO 9001:2015. The main changes are new leadership duties for quality culture and ethical behaviour, separate subclauses for risks and for opportunities, a quality policy that must support strategic direction, stronger change management, and much more guidance in Annex A. Certified organizations must transition by 30 September 2029, and from 31 March 2028 new certifications can only be issued to the 2026 edition.
ISO 9001:2026 Transition Timeline
The dates come from Global ACI's mandatory transition requirements for ISO 9001:2026 (TECH-3-TR 2029-09-30), which accreditation bodies and accredited certification bodies must follow.
| Date | What happens | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 16 September 2026 | ISO 9001:2026 published | You can start updating your system now |
| 31 March 2027 | Accreditation bodies ready to assess the new edition | Certification bodies begin their own transitions |
| 30 September 2027 | Accreditation bodies complete transition decisions for certification bodies | Certification bodies can issue accredited ISO 9001:2026 certificates once their accreditation body approves |
| 31 March 2028 | New and initial certifications to ISO 9001:2026 only | No new ISO 9001:2015 certificates after this date |
| 30 September 2029 | Transition ends | ISO 9001:2015 certificates are no longer valid |
One detail catches people out. If your certificate runs past 30 September 2029, it still ends on that date unless you transition. Certification bodies do not have to shorten the expiry date printed on your certificate, but it stops being valid all the same.
What Changed in ISO 9001:2026, Clause by Clause
ISO's technical committee describes the edition as clearer wording and better usability built on the existing framework, with more emphasis on leadership, quality culture and accountability. Here is where the changes sit.
| Clause | What changed | What to update |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Terms and definitions | Core harmonized structure terms are now listed in the standard, alongside the reference to ISO 9000 | Check your documents use the terms consistently |
| 4.1 and 4.2 Context | The 2024 climate change amendment is built in | Record whether climate change is a relevant issue, and any related needs of interested parties |
| 5.1 Leadership | Top management must promote quality culture and ethical behaviour | Show how leaders do this, for example in reviews, objectives and communication |
| 5.2 Quality policy | The policy must take context into account and support strategic direction | Review the policy wording against your strategy |
| 6.1 Risks and opportunities | Split into subclauses 6.1.1 to 6.1.3, separating actions on risks from actions on opportunities | Update your risk register or method so opportunities are handled on their own |
| 6.3 Planning of changes | Change management strengthened | Plan, communicate, monitor and review changes to the system |
| 7.1.4 and 7.3 | Quality culture and ethical behaviour added to the work environment and awareness requirements | Add them to induction and awareness training |
| 8 and 9 | Mostly terminology and layout | Little or no change for most organizations |
| 10 Improvement | Continual improvement consolidated, with guidance linking it to context, risks, opportunities and technology | Check your improvement process covers these inputs |
| Annex A | Much expanded guidance on the intent of clauses 4 to 10 | Use it when interpreting requirements. It adds no new obligations |
What did not change
- The structure. The standard still follows the harmonized structure used by ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO/IEC 27001, so integrated systems stay aligned.
- Operations. Clause 8 requirements for products and services are largely the same.
- Documentation. There is still no requirement for a quality manual or a fixed set of procedures.
- Your certificate. An ISO 9001:2015 certificate stays valid during the transition period.

See ISO 9001 certificationGetting Certified Now: ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 9001:2026?
It depends on where you start.
- Already certified to ISO 9001:2015. Keep your certificate, update your system, and transition at a scheduled audit before 30 September 2029.
- Starting certification now. Build your system to ISO 9001:2026 from day one. A new ISO 9001:2015 certificate would need transitioning within months, and new ISO 9001:2015 certificates cannot be issued after 31 March 2028.
- Needed for a tender or contract soon. Confirm with your certification body which edition it can certify to on your audit dates, and plan from there.
How the ISO 9001:2026 Transition Audit Works
You do not need a full new certification. Under the Global ACI requirements:
- Timing: the transition can be combined with a surveillance or recertification audit, or done as a separate special audit.
- Scope: the auditor reviews the changed requirements, changes to your context, and any other changes to your management system.
- Remote audits: the transition audit can be done remotely, under IAF MD 4, where the audit objectives can still be met.
- Audit time: there is no fixed extra day. The certification body decides whether more time is needed and must justify it, and extra time may not be needed when the transition is combined with a full system audit.
The cheapest route for most organizations is to time the transition with the next recertification audit, when the whole system is reviewed anyway. If your recertification falls after September 2029, plan it at a surveillance audit instead.
ISO 9001:2026 Transition Checklist
- Get the standard and brief your management team on the changes.
- Run a gap analysis of your system against each changed clause in the table above.
- Update the context review (4.1 and 4.2), including whether climate change is relevant.
- Review the quality policy and objectives against your strategic direction (5.2).
- Show leadership on quality culture and ethics (5.1) and add both to awareness training (7.3).
- Separate risks and opportunities in your planning method (6.1).
- Strengthen change management records (6.3).
- Run an internal audit against the 2026 edition and hold a management review.
- Agree the transition audit date and any extra audit days with your certification body.
If your internal auditors learned ISO 9001:2015, refresh them first. Our ISO 9001:2026 Lead Auditor course is a five-day live online course, and our internal auditor training suits teams who audit their own system.
Choosing a Certification Body for Your Transition
Your transition audit is a good moment to check that your certification body is the right one. Ask:
- Is it accredited for ISO 9001? Accredited certification is what customers and tenders ask for. See what an accredited ISO certification body is.
- Will it combine the transition with a scheduled audit? This avoids paying for a separate visit.
- Are extra audit days and fees explained upfront? You should know the cost before the audit is booked.
- Can it audit remotely? Read how remote ISO audits work.
- Will the same auditor stay with you? Continuity makes the transition faster.

When was ISO 9001:2026 published?
ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition of the standard, was published on 16 September 2026. It replaces ISO 9001:2015, including its 2024 climate change amendment.
What are the main changes in ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001:2026 is an update rather than a rewrite. Top management must now promote quality culture and ethical behaviour, and staff must be aware of them. Risks and opportunities are handled in separate subclauses of 6.1. The quality policy must support the organization's strategic direction, change management is strengthened, the climate change amendment is built into clause 4, core terms are listed in the standard, and Annex A gives much more guidance on intent.
What is the ISO 9001:2026 transition deadline?
Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 must complete their transition by 30 September 2029. After that date ISO 9001:2015 certificates are no longer valid, even if the certificate's three-year cycle would run longer. The dates are set by Global ACI's mandatory transition requirements, TECH-3-TR 2029-09-30.
Can we still get certified to ISO 9001:2015?
Yes, for now. From 31 March 2028, certification bodies may issue new and initial certifications only to ISO 9001:2026. A new ISO 9001:2015 certificate would still have to be transitioned by 30 September 2029, so most organizations starting from scratch should build their system to the 2026 edition.
Is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?
Yes. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid during the transition period, until 30 September 2029 at the latest. You keep your certificate while you update your system and complete a transition audit.
How does the ISO 9001:2026 transition audit work?
The transition can be done at a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit, or at a separate special audit. The auditor reviews the changed requirements, any changes to your context and any other changes to your management system. It can be done remotely where the audit objectives can still be met. Extra audit time is decided case by case and may not be needed when the transition is combined with a full system audit.
Do I need a new quality manual for ISO 9001:2026?
No. ISO 9001:2026 does not require a quality manual, and most organizations can update their existing documents. Typical updates are the quality policy, the risk and opportunity process, change management records, awareness training on quality culture and ethics, and the context review, including climate change.
How long does the ISO 9001:2026 transition take?
For a well-run ISO 9001:2015 system, the updates often take weeks rather than months: a gap analysis, a few document and process changes, awareness training, an internal audit and a management review. The transition audit can then be timed with your next surveillance or recertification audit.
Which certification body can transition our ISO 9001 certificate to ISO 9001:2026?
Choose an accredited certification body that will plan the transition into one of your scheduled audits, explain any extra audit days upfront and keep the same auditor across your cycle. Accredify Global, a certification body accredited by UAF, an IAF MLA signatory, assigns a senior auditor to every engagement, gives a fixed-fee proposal after a free scope review, runs a structured 8 to 12 week process for new certifications and audits remotely where possible.
