ISO 56001 Certification for Innovation Management Systems
ISO 56001 is the first international requirements standard for managing innovation, published in September 2024. Certification shows investors, partners, and funders that new ideas are chosen, tested, and delivered in a structured way. Audits cover innovation management systems with senior-led audits and a fixed fee. Most organizations certify in 6–12 weeks.
What Is ISO 56001 Certification?
ISO 56001 certification is independent confirmation that an organization runs an innovation management system that meets the 2024 standard. The auditor checks how leaders set an innovation vision and strategy, and how opportunities are found and tested. They also check how resources are allocated across a portfolio, and how results are measured and learned from. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.
Innovation is uncertain by nature, and the standard accepts that. It does not ask you to guarantee success. It asks you to manage uncertainty deliberately, stop weak ideas early, and scale the strong ones.
The audit looks at real innovation work. We follow a few initiatives from first insight to launch or closure, and check that decisions were made the way your system says.
The 2024 Edition, ISO 56002, and the Old CEN/TS 16555
ISO 56001:2024 is the first certifiable innovation standard. ISO published it in September 2024. It uses the harmonized structure shared by ISO 9001 and ISO 27001, which makes integrated audits straightforward.
ISO 56002 is guidance. Published in 2019, it describes good practice and helps you design a system, but it uses "should" and cannot be certified.
There is no ISO 16555. The name comes from CEN/TS 16555, an earlier European technical specification series on innovation management. The ISO 56000 family has largely taken its place. Organizations that want a certificate today should certify to ISO 56001.

The Five Innovation Processes Auditors Test
The standard expects these steps to be flexible, repeated, and able to stop ideas that do not work.
| Process | What it means | Evidence the auditor reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Identify opportunities | Spotting needs, trends, and problems worth solving | Sources of insight and how they are screened |
| Create concepts | Turning opportunities into possible solutions | Concept records and selection criteria |
| Validate concepts | Testing assumptions with users and data | Experiments, pilots, and go or stop decisions |
| Develop solutions | Building what has been validated | Development plans and resource decisions |
| Deploy solutions | Launching and capturing value | Launch results measured against objectives |
The steps do not have to run in a straight line. A team might validate a concept, learn something new, and go back to look for a better opportunity. The standard welcomes that, as long as each decision is made on evidence and recorded. Auditors look for that learning loop, not a perfect waterfall.
ISO 56001 Certification Requirements, Clause by Clause
The harmonized structure, applied to innovation.
| Clause | What it requires | What the auditor checks |
|---|---|---|
| 4. Context | Internal and external issues, interested parties, scope, and innovation intent | Why and where you innovate |
| 5. Leadership | Innovation vision, policy, roles, and culture | Leaders who fund and protect innovation |
| 6. Planning | Risks, opportunities, objectives, strategy, and portfolio | A portfolio linked to strategy |
| 7. Support | People, time, money, knowledge, tools, and intellectual property | Resources actually allocated |
| 8. Operation | Innovation initiatives and the five processes | Initiatives traced from idea to result |
| 9. Performance | Monitoring, internal audit, and management review | Innovation measures reviewed by leaders |
| 10. Improvement | Deviations, corrective action, and improvement | Lessons from stopped initiatives used |
Culture gets real attention in the leadership clause. Auditors talk to people below management level. They ask whether staff can raise ideas, whether experiments are allowed to fail, and whether time is set aside for exploration. Policy documents alone do not answer those questions; what people say and do does.

The gaps that most often delay a certificate.
Strategy findings
- Innovation strategy not linked to business strategy
- No clear criteria for choosing which ideas to fund
- Portfolio reviewed once a year, if at all
- Innovation measures limited to the number of ideas
- No owner for intellectual property decisions
Process findings
- Ideas skip validation and go straight to development
- Stopped projects closed without lessons recorded
- User testing claimed but not documented
- Budget allocated outside the stated process
- Deployed solutions never checked against objectives
Most first audits find a gap between the process on paper and how decisions are really made. That is normal, and it is easy to fix once it is visible. The fastest way to check readiness is to pick one initiative that launched and one that was stopped. Trace both back to the opportunity they came from, the evidence used at each decision, and what was learned. If both trails are complete, your system is working.
ISO 56001 Certification Cost and Timeline
There is no price list. The audit man-days your scope needs set one fixed fee.
What sets the audit man-days
- People: staff involved in innovation work
- Sites: labs, offices, and innovation hubs
- Initiatives: number and variety in the portfolio
- Partners: open innovation and joint development
- Integration: combined with ISO 9001 or 27001
How long it takes
| Proposal | Days after scoping |
|---|---|

Frequently Asked Questions About ISO 56001 Certification
Straight answers on the standard, ISO 56002, ISO 16555, cost, and timeline.
What is ISO 56001 certification?
ISO 56001 certification is independent confirmation that an organization runs an innovation management system that meets the standard. It shows investors, partners and funders that innovation is directed, resourced and measured, not left to chance.
When was ISO 56001 published?
ISO 56001:2024 was published in September 2024. It is the first edition and the first ISO requirements standard for innovation management that can be certified.
What is the difference between ISO 56001 and ISO 56002?
ISO 56002:2019 gives guidance on innovation management and cannot be certified. The 2024 standard sets requirements that an auditor can check, so it can be certified.
Is there an ISO 16555 certification?
No ISO 16555 standard exists. CEN/TS 16555 was a European technical specification series on innovation management, now largely replaced in practice by the ISO 56000 family. For certification, the standard to use is ISO 56001.
Who needs ISO 56001 certification?
Organizations that depend on new products, services or business models. Typical users are technology companies, manufacturers with research teams, life sciences firms, universities and public innovation agencies.
Does the standard require a big research department?
No. The standard applies to any size or type of organization. A small company can meet it with a simple, clear process that turns opportunities into tested and deployed results.
What are the five innovation processes?
Identifying opportunities, creating concepts, validating them, developing solutions, and deploying them. The standard expects these steps to be flexible and to learn from both success and failure.
Does the standard cover intellectual property?
It requires you to manage intellectual property as part of innovation, such as checking freedom to operate and protecting your own ideas. It does not replace legal advice or patent filings.
Can innovation management be combined with ISO 9001?
Yes. Both use the harmonized structure, so they can be audited together. Quality management keeps today's products consistent; innovation management builds tomorrow's.
Does certification guarantee successful innovation?
No. Innovation is uncertain by nature. Certification shows you manage that uncertainty in a structured way, learn from results, and improve over time.
How long does ISO 56001 certification take?
Most organizations with a working innovation process certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. A new system needs time to run and produce evidence first.
How much does ISO 56001 certification cost?
The cost follows the audit man-days your scope needs. Headcount, sites, innovation teams and the activities in scope set the man-days. A free scoping review gives you a tailored, fixed-fee proposal.
Is accredited innovation management certification available?
Accreditation for ISO 56001 is still developing in many countries. Your proposal names the certification body that will issue your certificate. If a buyer requires accredited certification, tell us at scoping.
What do auditors look at in an innovation audit?
Real innovation initiatives: how ideas were chosen, what was learned, how money and people were allocated, and how results were measured against the innovation strategy.
Does Accredify Global help design our innovation process?
No. Certification must stay impartial, so neither we nor the certification body can design your system. Your team, or a consultant you choose, builds it.
