ISO Certification in Mexico: Accredited Audits for Nearshoring Plants, Exporters, and Service Firms
ISO certification in Mexico is often the first thing a US or European customer checks before moving production south. Accredify Global audits Mexican plants, maquiladoras, and service firms. Common requests are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 13485, and ISO 27001. Our headquarters in Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas, shares a time zone with central Mexico.
What ISO Certification in Mexico Proves to Customers
ISO certification in Mexico means an accredited certification body has checked that your management system meets an international standard and works on the shop floor, not only on paper. Auditors read your records, talk to supervisors and operators, and walk production lines, warehouses, and offices. A system that conforms receives a three-year certificate, confirmed by a surveillance audit each year.
Nearshoring drives most new requests. Companies moving supply chains closer to the United States are opening or expanding plants in Nuevo León, Coahuila, Querétaro, Guanajuato, and Jalisco. Their customers send supplier questionnaires that start with one line: send your ISO 9001 certificate.
The automotive corridor sets a high bar. Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers around Saltillo, Ramos Arizpe, Silao, Celaya, and Aguascalientes work to customer-specific requirements. ISO 9001 is the base of that chain. Many plants add ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, because carmakers score environment and safety in supplier audits.
Border manufacturing has its own pattern. Maquiladoras in Tijuana, Mexicali, Ciudad Juárez, Reynosa, and Matamoros build medical devices, electronics, and wiring harnesses for US brands. Device plants in Baja California rely on ISO 13485, while electronics lines in Guadalajara and Juárez usually start with ISO 9001.
Services are growing too. Fintechs, banks, call centers, and software firms in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey serve clients who expect ISO 27001. The 2025 data protection law has made privacy and security evidence a routine part of contract talks.
Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is public in its directory. Some customers or tenders name a particular accreditation body, such as the national body ema. Send us that wording before you book and we will confirm the fit.
Mexican Rules in 2026 That Shape Certification Requests
Data protection moved to a new law and a new authority. A new Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties was published on 20 March 2025. It took effect the next day. It replaced the 2010 law. INAI was dissolved, and the Secretariat of Anti-Corruption and Good Governance (SABG) now enforces privacy duties for the private sector.
Fines are counted in UMA. Penalties now use the Unidad de Medida y Actualización instead of the minimum wage. They range from 100 to 320,000 UMA, and the amount doubles when sensitive personal data is involved. When a breach significantly affects people's rights, the controller must inform them without delay.
The work week is getting shorter. A constitutional reform cuts the legal week from 48 hours to 40. The cut runs two hours a year from 2027 and reaches 40 hours in 2030. Plants running three shifts will rework rosters, training time, and supervision, which ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 audits will look at.

Standards Mexican Customers Ask For
Supplier portals and tender files differ, but these standards come up again and again.
| Sector | What the buyer worries about | Usual standards |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive suppliers in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and the Bajío | Defects, traceability, and on-time delivery | ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 |
| Medical device plants in Tijuana and Mexicali | Device quality and regulatory files | ISO 13485 and ISO 14001 |
| Aerospace suppliers in Querétaro, Chihuahua, and Sonora | Process control and special processes | ISO 9001, with AS9100 as a separate scheme |
| Electronics manufacturers in Guadalajara and Juárez | Yield, component control, and data security | ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 |
| Food and beverage exporters | Food safety for US and Asian buyers | ISO 22000 and HACCP |
| Fintechs, banks, and contact centers | Customer data and service continuity | ISO 27001, ISO 27701, and ISO 22301 |
| Mines in Zacatecas, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango | Worker safety, water, and community scrutiny | ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001 |
IATF 16949 and AS9100 are separate sector schemes with their own rules. ISO 9001 underpins both, but our UAF accreditation covers the twelve ISO standards listed in our scope.
A typical nearshoring case looks like this. A US company runs a plant in Apodaca or Santa Catarina, a warehouse in Laredo, and an engineering office in Monterrey. Its customer wants one supplier record, not three. One integrated ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 system can cover the Mexican plant and the US sites under the same organization. The audit then samples each site, and the customer sees one certificate listing every address. Shelter operations are different. Sometimes a shelter company is the legal employer and importer of record. Then the scope must say clearly who runs which process, and we confirm that split during scoping.
How ISO Supports Mexican Requirements
A certificate is not a permit. It is the system that keeps controls running between customer, SAT, and authority visits.
| Rule or system | Who it reaches | How ISO supports it |
|---|---|---|
| LFPDPPP 2025 | Private companies handling personal data | ISO 27701 runs privacy duties; ISO 27001 protects the data |
| NOM-035-STPS-2018 | Workplaces assessing psychosocial risk factors | ISO 45001 builds the risk process the NOM expects |
| IMMEX program | Maquiladoras importing inputs temporarily | ISO 9001 inventory and traceability records support audits |
| General Law of Administrative Responsibilities | Companies dealing with public bodies | ISO 37001 documents integrity controls |
| Federal procurement on ComprasMX | Firms bidding for federal contracts | Certificates strengthen technical proposals |
Mexico still has no single comprehensive cybersecurity statute, so contracts and sector rules fill the gap. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. Exporters shipping across the US border can review our AEO and CTPAT readiness page, and payment firms can add PCI DSS readiness. Official Mexican Standards (NOMs) from the Ministry of Economy and other agencies are mandatory product and safety rules. An ISO certificate never replaces a NOM conformity assessment.

FAQ: ISO Certification in Mexico
Answers on nearshoring, maquiladoras, the 2025 data law, NOMs, cost, and timing.
How do I get ISO certification in Mexico?
Pick the standard your customer or tender requests, run the system long enough to produce records, then book the audit. An accredited body runs Stage 1 and Stage 2 and issues a three-year certificate if you conform.
How long does ISO certification take in Mexico?
With a working system, most plants certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. New plants, several states, or several standards add time.
How much does ISO certification cost in Mexico?
There is no fixed price. The fee follows the audit man-days your scope needs, based on headcount, shifts, sites, risk, and standards.
Is Accredify Global accredited?
Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 13485, and ISO 27001.
Do I need a certificate accredited by ema?
Only if your customer or tender says so. Many accept any accredited certificate from a body in the international arrangement, so send us the exact clause before you book.
Can a maquiladora under IMMEX be certified?
Yes. The certificate covers the legal entity that runs the management system. If a shelter company is the employer of record, the scope must show which party controls each process.
Does an ISO certificate replace a NOM?
No. NOMs are mandatory Mexican technical rules with their own conformity assessment. ISO certification shows your management system works but does not certify a product against a NOM.
Does ISO 45001 help with NOM-035?
Yes. ISO 45001 sets up hazard identification, worker consultation, and follow-up, which support the psychosocial risk assessment NOM-035 requires.
Who enforces data protection in Mexico now?
Since the 2025 law took effect, the Secretariat of Anti-Corruption and Good Governance enforces private-sector data protection. INAI no longer exists.
What are the fines under the 2025 data protection law?
Fines range from 100 to 320,000 UMA. They double when sensitive personal data is involved.
Does ISO 27701 help with the new data protection law?
Yes. It adds privacy roles, records of processing, rights requests, and breach handling to an ISO 27001 system.
Will the 40-hour work week affect our audit?
It may. As weekly hours fall from 2027, auditors will check that shift changes, training, and supervision still meet your procedures.
Can audits be done remotely?
Document review and some interviews can be remote where the rules allow. Plants, warehouses, and mines are audited in person.
Can audits be held in Spanish?
Tell us at scoping. We confirm the audit language in the proposal, and your records can stay in Spanish.
Will Accredify Global write our procedures?
No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
