What ISO Certification for Retail Covers

ISO certification for retail and e-commerce is an independent audit against ISO standards. It checks how a retailer or online seller manages information security, privacy, service quality, and continuity. Most start with ISO 27001, because payment and customer data are the biggest risk. ISO 9001 follows for order accuracy and returns. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.

Retail also faces rules that no ISO certificate meets on its own. PCI DSS governs card data. In the EU, the General Product Safety Regulation and the European Accessibility Act now apply to online sales. Privacy laws cover customer data everywhere you sell.

Accredify Global is an accredited certification body. We certify the ISO systems underneath these rules and assess your PCI DSS readiness. Your QSA, payment partner, or marketplace then sees organized evidence instead of scattered files.

Retail Rules in 2026: PCI DSS v4.0.1, EU Product Safety, and Accessibility

PCI DSS v4.0.1 checkout rules are fully in force. Since 31 March 2025, merchants must control scripts on payment pages and detect unauthorized changes to them. These rules target skimming attacks on online checkouts.

EU product safety and accessibility rules now cover online sales. The General Product Safety Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/988, has applied since 13 December 2024, with specific duties for online marketplaces. The European Accessibility Act has applied to e-commerce services since 28 June 2025.

Privacy and quality standards have been updated. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 is now a standalone privacy standard. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, and 2015 certificates must transition by 30 September 2029.

Most retailers rely heavily on outside platforms: a hosted store builder, a payment provider, a marketplace, a third-party logistics firm, and a customer service tool. Responsibility is shared, not handed over. Your certificate scope should say which controls the platform provides and which ones your team runs, such as admin access, plug-ins, and data exports. Auditors check that this split is written down and that you review your key providers at least once a year.

Scope and cost

What Drives the Cost of ISO Certification for Retailers

We do not publish a price list. The fee is set by the audit man-days your business needs.

Factors that add audit days

  • Many stores or warehouses in scope
  • Several brands, sites, or platforms
  • Card data stored or processed in-house
  • Separate standards audited on separate visits

Factors that save audit days

  • Outsourced, tokenized payments that shrink scope
  • Stores that follow one standard procedure
  • Security and privacy audited together
  • Audits planned outside peak trading

Store sampling keeps multi-site audits practical. The auditor visits head office, the main warehouse, and a sample of stores chosen by size, region, and risk, rather than every location. If your stores follow the same procedures, the sample can stay small.

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification for Retail and E-commerce

Straight answers on PCI DSS, EU rules, privacy, cost, and timeline.

Which ISO certification do retail and e-commerce businesses need?

Most start with ISO 27001 for customer and payment data and ISO 9001 for consistent service. Retailers with stores and warehouses add ISO 45001, and those selling food add ISO 22000 or HACCP.

Is ISO 10002 a certification?

No. ISO 10002 gives guidance on complaints handling and cannot be certified. ISO 10004 on customer satisfaction and ISO 10008 on online transactions are also guidance. ISO 9001 is the certifiable route for customer service quality.

Does Accredify Global perform PCI DSS assessments?

No. We are not a Qualified Security Assessor or an Approved Scanning Vendor. We run PCI DSS v4.0.1 readiness assessments and prepare evidence for your QSA or self-assessment questionnaire.

Does ISO 27001 cover PCI DSS?

Partly. ISO 27001 builds the security system, and much of its evidence supports PCI DSS. PCI DSS still has prescriptive card data controls that must be validated through its own process.

What changed for online checkouts under PCI DSS v4.0.1?

Since 31 March 2025, merchants must manage scripts on payment pages and detect unauthorized changes to them. These rules aim to stop skimming attacks on checkout pages.

What is the EU General Product Safety Regulation?

Regulation (EU) 2023/988 has applied since 13 December 2024. It sets safety duties for consumer products, including those sold online, and gives online marketplaces specific obligations to act on unsafe products.

Does the European Accessibility Act apply to online stores?

Yes. Since 28 June 2025, e-commerce services offered to EU consumers must meet accessibility requirements, with some exemptions for microenterprises. ISO certification does not cover accessibility.

Do e-commerce companies need ISO 27701?

Often. Online retailers hold large amounts of personal data. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 certifies a privacy management system and supports GDPR and US state privacy laws.

Do warehouses and fulfillment centers need ISO 45001?

Many do. Picking, lifting, forklifts and peak-season staffing create real injury risks. ISO 45001 shows those risks are assessed and controlled.

Can a marketplace seller get ISO 9001?

Yes. Sellers use ISO 9001 to control sourcing, listings, order handling and returns. It is a common request from larger marketplaces and wholesale buyers.

Can one certificate cover stores, warehouses and head office?

Yes. Sites that run the same management system can share one multi-site certificate. The certification body audits a sample of sites and the central function every time.

How long does ISO certification take for a retailer?

Most retailers with a working management system certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Many stores, several countries or a new system take longer.

How much does ISO certification cost for retail and e-commerce companies?

The cost follows the audit man-days your scope needs. Headcount, stores, warehouses, systems and the standards in scope set the man-days. A free scoping review gives you a tailored proposal.

When should retailers schedule audits?

Away from peak season. We plan audits around holiday trading, sales events and stocktakes so the audit sees normal operations without disrupting them.

Does Accredify Global write our policies?

No. As a certification body we must stay impartial, so we audit and certify but do not write your system. Your team, or a consultant you choose, closes any gaps.
