What ISO Certification for Media Covers

ISO certification for media is an independent audit. It checks how a broadcaster, studio, streaming service, publisher, or production company manages the risks that matter to its clients. The usual starting point is ISO 27001 for content and data security. Broadcasters and platforms add ISO 22301 for continuity, productions add ISO 45001 for crew safety, and teams using generative AI add ISO 42001. A passed audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.

Media runs on assets that are valuable before release and worthless once leaked. A pirated episode, an exposed subscriber list, or a dead transmission chain can cost more than a year of revenue from a single client. Studios, networks, and brands now ask suppliers to prove control, not just promise it.

Accredify Global is an accredited certification body. Our auditors visit edit suites, machine rooms, master control, and locations, and they trace real files, real incidents, and real crew briefings through your records.

Entertainment and Media in 2026: New EU Rules and Revised Standards

The European Media Freedom Act now applies. Its main obligations have applied since 8 August 2025. They cover editorial independence, transparency of media ownership, and fair audience measurement. Groups that operate in the EU are reviewing governance and disclosure as a result.

Accessibility is now a legal duty for many services. The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025. It reaches services that give access to audiovisual media, such as streaming apps and electronic program guides, along with e-books and online ticketing.

Key standards were refreshed. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 turned privacy management into a standalone certifiable standard. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. New certifications must use it from 31 March 2028, and 2015 certificates must transition by 30 September 2029.

By business

Matching Standards to Each Part of the Media Industry

A newsroom, a visual effects house, and a concert promoter carry very different risks, so ISO certification for media is scoped business by business.

BusinessWhat clients worry aboutStandards that help most
Broadcasters and news networksOff-air events, cyberattacks on playoutISO 22301 and ISO 27001
Studios and post-productionLeaks of dailies, cuts, and VFX shotsISO 27001, plus TPN where studios require it
Streaming and subscription servicesSubscriber data, uptime, and recommendation AIISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 22301, and ISO 42001
Production companies and crewsStunts, rigging, travel, and long shiftsISO 45001 and ISO 14001
Live events and concertsCrowd safety, sustainability, and suppliersISO 45001 and ISO 20121
Publishers, games, and agenciesClient data, IP, and AI-generated outputISO 27001, ISO 9001, and ISO 42001

Freelancers make media different from most sectors. A production may scale from ten people to several hundred in a week, then disband. Auditors look at how you onboard short-term crew, grant and remove system access, and brief people on confidentiality and safety. These controls matter most when the team changes fastest.

ISO Certification for Media: What We Certify and What We Don't

Standards media clients ask about, with a clear line between certification and other programs.

Standard or programWhat it coversWhat Accredify Global provides
ISO 27001Information and content securityCertification
ISO 22301Business continuityCertification
ISO/IEC 27701Privacy of viewer and subscriber dataCertification
ISO/IEC 42001Management of AI systemsCertification
ISO 45001Crew and staff health and safetyCertification
ISO 20121Sustainable eventsCertification
TPN Blue or Gold ShieldMPA content security program for vendorsNot offered; assessed by TPN-qualified assessors
ISO 10002Complaints handling guidanceGuidance only; covered within ISO 9001

ISO 27701 and ISO 42001 are within our UAF accreditation scope. For the other standards listed, your proposal names the certification body that will issue your certificate.

Vendors working for major studios often hear about TPN before ISO. The two do different jobs. TPN is the film industry's own program, and a Gold Shield comes from an assessor that TPN has qualified. ISO 27001 is an international certificate recognized by banks, telecoms, governments, and advertisers as well as studios. Many post houses hold both. The ISO system provides the policies, risk assessment, and internal audits that make each TPN cycle smoother.

On the audit

What Auditors Look At in Studios, Newsrooms, and Platforms

During ISO certification for media, we follow a piece of content from ingest to delivery, and a crew member from hire to wrap.

AreaEvidence we reviewCommon weak spots
Content handlingIngest, storage, transfer, and deletion of mediaDrives left unencrypted on location
Screeners and leaksWatermarking, link expiry, and access logsReview links shared without expiry
Set safetyRisk assessments, stunt plans, and working hoursAssessments not updated after script changes
Viewer dataConsent, retention, and third-party sharingOld marketing lists never purged
AI toolsApproved uses, rights checks, and human reviewStaff using unapproved AI services
ContinuityBackup playout, failover tests, and recovery plansDisaster recovery never rehearsed

Generative AI has raised new questions for the sector. Who owns a voice clone? Was training data licensed? Who approves AI-assisted edits before broadcast? ISO 42001 does not answer these legal questions for you. It does require a documented process for assessing AI risk, assigning responsibility, and keeping people in the loop. Auditors then test that the process is used.

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification for Entertainment and Media

Answers on TPN, content security, crew safety, AI, cost, and timeline.

Which ISO certification do media and entertainment companies need?

Most start with ISO 27001 to protect content, scripts and customer data. Broadcasters and streaming services add ISO 22301 for continuity, and production companies add ISO 45001 for crew safety on set and on location.

What is TPN?

The Trusted Partner Network is the Motion Picture Association's content security program for vendors to film, TV and games companies. Blue Shield is a self-assessment; Gold Shield is an assessment by a TPN-qualified assessor.

Does Accredify Global perform TPN assessments?

No. TPN Gold Shield assessments are carried out by individual assessors qualified by TPN. We certify ISO 27001, which covers much of the same ground and is recognized well beyond the film industry.

Does ISO 27001 replace a TPN assessment?

No. Studios that require TPN expect a TPN assessment. ISO 27001 gives you a certified security system that makes the TPN assessment easier and satisfies clients outside the studio world.

Do production companies need ISO 45001?

Many do. Stunts, rigging, pyrotechnics, working at height and long shifts create serious risks. ISO 45001 shows crew safety is managed, and some broadcasters and insurers ask for it.

Is there a sustainability certification for productions?

Screen-industry programs such as albert certify productions for carbon and sustainability. For organizations, ISO 14001 certifies environmental management and ISO 20121 certifies sustainable events and live productions.

Do live events and concerts need ISO 20121?

ISO 20121 helps event and live production companies manage sustainability across planning and delivery. Our events page covers it in more detail.

What is the European Media Freedom Act?

The European Media Freedom Act sets EU rules on media independence, transparency of ownership and editorial freedom. Its main obligations have applied since 8 August 2025.

Do streaming services need ISO 27701?

Often. Streaming and subscription services hold large amounts of viewer data. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 certifies privacy management and supports GDPR and US state privacy laws.

Do media companies using AI need ISO 42001?

Increasingly. Generative AI is used for scripts, dubbing, editing and recommendations. ISO 42001 certifies an AI management system covering risk, transparency and oversight.

Is ISO 10002 a certification?

No. ISO 10002 is guidance on complaints handling and cannot be certified. Audience and customer complaints are covered through ISO 9001, which can be certified.

Can one certificate cover studios, offices and post-production sites?

Yes. Sites that run the same management system can share one multi-site certificate. The certification body audits a sample of sites and the central function every time.

How long does ISO certification take for a media company?

Most companies with a working management system certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Several studios, several standards or a new system take longer.

How much does ISO certification cost for media companies?

The cost follows the audit man-days your scope needs. Headcount, sites, services and the standards in scope set the man-days. A free scoping review gives you a tailored proposal.

Does Accredify Global write our policies?

No. As a certification body we must stay impartial, so we audit and certify but do not write your system. Your team, or a consultant you choose, closes any gaps.
