What ISO Certification in Greece Proves to Charterers, Buyers, and Authorities

ISO certification in Greece means an accredited certification body has checked your management system against an international standard and found it working in practice. The audit team reads your records, talks to staff, and observes the work in shore offices, hotel kitchens, packing plants, terminals, or sites. A conforming system receives a certificate valid for three years, with surveillance audits in the first and second years.

Shipping sits at the center of Greek demand. Greek owners control one of the largest merchant fleets in the world, and most ship management offices are in Piraeus and the southern suburbs of Athens. Charterers, oil majors, and banks review these managers closely. Many ask for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 alongside the safety management system the ISM Code already requires.

Tourism is the second pillar. Hotels in Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Halkidiki, and the Cyclades host tour operators who audit food safety, hygiene, and guest data. ISO 22000 helps hotel kitchens and caterers show control, and ISO 27001 protects booking and payment data that flows through many systems.

Food exports carry a strong Greek identity. Olive oil, feta, yogurt, table olives, honey, and fresh fruit from Macedonia and the Peloponnese reach retailers across Europe and North America. Packers and processors use ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 to answer supplier questionnaires and to keep traceability consistent from grove or farm to export pallet.

Cybersecurity law changed the picture in late 2024. Law 5160/2024 transposed the NIS2 Directive and gave the National Cybersecurity Authority real supervisory powers. Energy, transport, health, digital infrastructure, food production, and manufacturing firms now need documented risk management. ISO 27001 gives that work a structure an auditor can test.

Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is published in its directory. The national accreditation body is ESYD, and the national standards body is ELOT. If a tender, charterer, or regulator names ESYD or another body, share the clause before you book and we will confirm the fit.

Greek Rules in 2026 That Drive Certification Requests

NIS2 is already law in Greece. Law 5160/2024 took effect on 27 November 2024. It is supervised by the National Cybersecurity Authority, which reports to the Minister of Digital Governance. Entities had to self-register by 27 January 2025. Management bodies had to approve cybersecurity measures by 27 February 2025.

Incident reporting runs on three clocks. An early warning is due within 24 hours of becoming aware of a significant incident. A full notification follows within 72 hours, and a final report within one month. Each entity must also name an Information and Communication Systems Security Officer, a role that cannot be combined with the GDPR data protection officer.

Fines reach board level. Essential entities face fines up to €10 million or 2% of worldwide turnover, whichever is higher. Important entities face up to €7 million or 1.4%. Board members can be held personally liable, including suspension from management duties.

Data protection has its own national law. Law 4624/2019 took effect on 29 August 2019 and supplements the GDPR in Greece. The Hellenic Data Protection Authority supervises it and receives breach notices within 72 hours. It can fine public bodies up to €10 million. In January 2025 it fined a Greek bank after an app upgrade linked one customer's account to another's phone number.

The ISM Code Document of Compliance comes from the flag state or a recognized organization. ISO certification sits alongside it and does not replace it.

A typical Greek ship manager runs one office in Piraeus or Glyfada and manages a fleet that never calls at home. The ISO audit focuses on the shore office: chartering, technical management, crewing, purchasing, and emergency response. Records from vessels are sampled through the office systems. Firms that already run a sound ISM system usually find the gap to ISO 9001 small, and ISO 14001 helps them answer the emissions questions charterers now send. Hotel groups follow a different path. They often start with ISO 22000 in the kitchens and add ISO 27001 when tour operators ask about booking data.

How ISO Supports Greek Requirements

No ISO certificate is a licence. It is the management system that keeps controls alive between inspections, tenders, and client audits.

Public tenders in Greece run through ESIDIS, the national e-procurement system on the Promitheus portal. Bidders sign with a qualified electronic signature and complete the European Single Procurement Document. Tender notices often list quality or environmental certificates as selection criteria, so check the wording early. Some needs call for testing rather than certification. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. Our NIS2 readiness and GDPR services sit within our wider compliance services. Banks and payment firms can add DORA readiness.

Planning the audit

Planning a Certification Audit in Greece

Greek calendars, islands, and paperwork that shape the audit plan.

Have these ready before Stage 1

  • GEMI registration and AFM tax number for each entity
  • Head office, branches, hotels, plants, and warehouses
  • The tender notice, charterer form, or NCSA duty behind the request
  • Your security officer and DPO named in writing

Scheduling notes

  • Offices work Monday to Friday
  • August slows most firms, especially around 15 August
  • Orthodox Easter week and Clean Monday close many offices
  • Seasonal hotels must be audited while open, usually April to October
  • Island sites need ferry or flight time, and summer winds can cancel crossings

What ISO Certification Costs in Greece

Each fee is built from audit man-days for every site and standard, listed in the proposal before you commit. Seasonal hotels in one group can be sampled rather than all visited each year.

What adds days

  • Hotels or branches spread over several islands
  • Large seasonal workforces in tourism or harvest
  • High-risk energy, port, or construction work
  • Each standard audited on its own

What saves days

  • One integrated system across all locations
  • Quality, safety, and environment audited together
  • Records in order before Stage 1
  • A full internal audit and management review done

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification in Greece

Answers on shipping, hotels, NIS2, the HDPA, tenders, cost, and timing.

How do I get ISO certification in Greece?

Pick the standard your charterer, buyer, or tender names. Run the system long enough to produce records, then book Stage 1 and Stage 2 with an accredited body. A three-year certificate follows once you conform.

How long does ISO certification take in Greece?

Organizations with a working system often certify within 6 to 12 weeks of Stage 1. Island sites, seasonal openings, and August can stretch the timeline.

How much does ISO certification cost in Greece?

There is no fixed price list. The proposal reflects the man-days your scope needs, based on staff, sites, risk, and the standards involved.

Is Accredify Global accredited?

Yes. UAF accredits us for twelve standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001.

Will a Greek tender accept a UAF-accredited certificate?

Many accept certificates from accredited bodies in the international arrangement. Some notices name ESYD, so send us the clause before you book.

Does ISO 27001 make us compliant with Law 5160/2024?

Not on its own. It gives a tested framework for the risk measures the law requires. You still register with the NCSA, name a security officer, and report incidents.

How fast must incidents be reported under Greek NIS2 rules?

An early warning within 24 hours, a notification within 72 hours, and a final report within one month.

Can our DPO also be the NIS2 security officer?

No. Greek law keeps the Information and Communication Systems Security Officer separate from the GDPR data protection officer.

How fast must a data breach go to the HDPA?

Under the GDPR, notifiable breaches go to the Hellenic Data Protection Authority within 72 hours of becoming aware.

Does ISO 9001 replace the ISM Code for ship managers?

No. The ISM Code is mandatory and certified by the flag state or a recognized organization. ISO 9001 extends the shore system for charterers and banks.

Can you audit a hotel on Crete or Rhodes?

Yes, while it is open and serving guests. We plan travel around flights and ferries and avoid the busiest summer weeks where possible.

Which standard should an olive oil exporter start with?

Most start with ISO 22000 for food safety. ISO 9001 often follows when retailers ask for broader quality evidence.

Can audits be partly remote?

Document review and some interviews can be remote where accreditation rules allow. Hotels, plants, and warehouses are audited in person.

Does ISO 14001 help with Greek CSRD reporting?

It helps collect reliable environmental data, which sustainability assurers test. It does not replace the report or its assurance.

Will Accredify Global write our procedures?

No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
