What ISO Certification in Italy Proves to Customers and Contracting Authorities

ISO certification in Italy means an accredited certification body has checked that your management system meets an ISO standard and that people really work to it. The audit team reads your records, talks to staff, and walks through plants, warehouses, building sites, or server rooms. If the system conforms, you receive a certificate valid for three years, with surveillance visits in the two years between.

Manufacturing is where most Italian demand starts. Districts such as ceramic tiles around Sassuolo, textiles in Prato, furniture in Brianza, and packaging machinery around Bologna sell to German, French, and US groups. Those customers run supplier audits and expect ISO 9001, often with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 beside it.

Public works add a legal reason. Under the Public Contracts Code, Legislative Decree 36/2023, firms bidding for works of €150,000 or more need SOA qualification. From class III upward, the SOA attestation also requires a quality system certificate issued by an accredited body.

Digital suppliers face newer pressure. Legislative Decree 138/2024 brought NIS2 into Italian law. The National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) now supervises essential and important entities across the sectors in its annexes. Those entities push security clauses down to their software, cloud, and managed service vendors, and ISO 27001 is the usual way to answer them.

Food and health complete the picture. The food valley around Parma and wine estates in Piedmont, Veneto, and Tuscany ship to demanding retailers. Pharmaceutical plants in Lombardy and Lazio supply distributors who audit them too. ISO 22000, ISO 9001, and ISO 13485 give those buyers a shared reference point.

Accredify Global holds UAF accreditation, and our scope appears in its public directory. ACCREDIA is the Italian national accreditation body, and UNI and CEI publish national standards. Does an SOA body, tender, or customer name ACCREDIA or another specific body? Send us the wording before you book and we will confirm the fit.

Italian Rules in 2026 That Drive Certification Requests

NIS2 is live and heading for its next milestone. Legislative Decree 138/2024 was published on 1 October 2024 and entered into force on 16 October 2024. Entities registered on the ACN portal, with a yearly window from 1 January to 28 February. Baseline security measures are due 18 months after an entity is told it is in scope, which for the first group falls in October 2026.

Incident reports follow three steps. A significant incident needs an early warning to CSIRT Italia within 24 hours, a notification within 72 hours, and a final report within one month. Fines reach €10 million or 2% of worldwide turnover for essential entities, and €7 million or 1.4% for important ones.

Italy passed its own AI law. Law 132/2025 took effect on 10 October 2025, alongside the EU AI Act. It names AgID and ACN as the national AI authorities. Employers must also tell staff when AI systems are used in the workplace.

Privacy still runs through the Garante. The GDPR applies together with the Privacy Code, Legislative Decree 196/2003, as amended by Legislative Decree 101/2018. Notifiable breaches go to the Garante within 72 hours, and children under 14 need parental consent for online services.

Standards Italian Customers and Tenders Ask For

Every customer questionnaire and tender is different, yet these combinations come up most often.

SectorWhat the buyer worries aboutUsual standards
Machinery and mechanical engineering in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and VenetoProcess control for foreign equipment makersISO 9001 and ISO 14001
Public works contractors holding SOA attestationQualification for larger tender classesISO 9001, plus ISO 45001 and ISO 14001
Food, wine, and cured meat producersFood safety for export retailersISO 22000 and HACCP
Pharmaceutical and medical device plantsProduct quality for EU regulators and distributorsISO 13485 and ISO 9001
Software, cloud, and managed service suppliers to NIS2 entitiesSupply chain security clausesISO 27001, ISO 27701, and ISO 20000-1
Textile, fashion, and leather firms in Tuscany and VenetoEnvironmental and chemical controls for brandsISO 14001 and ISO 9001
Companies running a 231 organizational modelBribery and safety liabilityISO 37001 and ISO 45001
Ceramics, glass, and paper plantsGas and electricity costISO 50001

SOA attestation, Garante decisions, and ACN supervision are separate processes. An ISO certificate supports them; it never replaces them.

A typical district supplier runs one plant, a warehouse, and a sales office, and sells to a handful of large foreign customers. Each customer sends its own questionnaire and may audit on site. One integrated ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 system gives all of them the same evidence. It also supports the safety organizational model described in Article 30 of Legislative Decree 81/2008. That model matters when a company relies on Legislative Decree 231/2001 to limit corporate liability.

How ISO Supports Italian Requirements

A certificate is not a permit or a regulator's approval. It keeps the controls running between customer audits, inspections, and tenders.

Some duties call for testing or a different scheme. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks, and NIS2 readiness maps the ACN baseline measures. Banks and insurers can use our DORA readiness service, and our GDPR services cover wider privacy work. Large companies reporting under Legislative Decree 125/2024, Italy's CSRD law, often draw on ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 records as source data.

Planning the audit

Planning a Certification Audit in Italy

Practical points that keep an Italian audit on the calendar.

Prepare before Stage 1

  • The SOA, tender, or customer clause you must meet
  • Whether records are kept in Italian, English, or both

Scheduling notes

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification in Italy

Answers on SOA, NIS2, the 231 model, OT23, cost, and timing.

How do I get ISO certification in Italy?

Pick the standard your customer, tender, or SOA body asks for and run it until it produces records. Then book Stage 1 and Stage 2 with an accredited body, which issues a three-year certificate once you conform.

How long does ISO certification take in Italy?

Companies with a working system often certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. The August shutdown, several plants, or a brand-new system can stretch that.

How much does ISO certification cost in Italy?

There is no fixed price list. The offer reflects the audit man-days your scope needs, based on staff numbers, sites, risk, and standards.

Is Accredify Global accredited?

Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001, and ISO 37001.

Do I need ISO 9001 for SOA attestation?

Yes, from class III upward. The SOA rules in Legislative Decree 36/2023 require a quality system certificate issued by an accredited body. Send us your SOA body's wording before booking.

Does an SOA body accept any accredited certificate?

SOA bodies check certificates against accreditation rules. If yours names ACCREDIA or a specific arrangement, share that text first and we will confirm the fit.

Does ISO 45001 lower our INAIL premium?

It can help. A valid ISO 45001 certificate from an accredited body scores as a prevention measure in the OT23 application, which closes on 28 February.

Does ISO 45001 support our 231 model?

Yes. Article 30 of Legislative Decree 81/2008 describes a safety organizational model, and an audited ISO 45001 system gives that model working controls.

Does ISO 37001 help with Legislative Decree 231/2001?

It gives anti-bribery controls an independent audit. It complements the 231 model and the supervisory body; it does not replace them.

Are we in scope of NIS2 in Italy?

Legislative Decree 138/2024 covers medium and large entities in the sectors listed in its annexes, plus some smaller ones. ACN confirms scope through its portal.

How fast must incidents be reported under Italian NIS2?

Send an early warning to CSIRT Italia within 24 hours, a notification within 72 hours, and a final report within one month.

How fast must a data breach go to the Garante?

Under the GDPR, notifiable breaches go to the Garante within 72 hours of the company becoming aware of them.

Does Law 132/2025 require ISO 42001?

No. The law sets national AI rules beside the EU AI Act. ISO 42001 gives you a managed way to meet them.

Can parts of the audit be remote?

Document review and some interviews can be remote where the rules allow. Plants, warehouses, and building sites are audited in person.

Will Accredify Global write our procedures?

No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we only audit and certify. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
