ISO 21401 is the international standard for sustainability management in hotels, resorts, and other accommodation. Certification shows guests, tour operators, and corporate buyers that environmental, social, and economic impacts are managed, not just promised. What Is ISO 21401 Certification?
ISO 21401 certification is independent confirmation that an accommodation establishment runs a sustainability management system that meets the standard. The auditor checks how you manage energy, water, waste, and biodiversity. They also check how you treat staff, keep guests safe, buy locally, and work with the community. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.
The standard focuses on what a property can control or influence. That keeps it practical for a 20-room guesthouse and a 500-room resort alike. You set the scope, the objectives, and the pace of improvement.
The audit looks at what happens across the property. We walk back-of-house areas, check meters and records, and talk to housekeeping, kitchen, engineering, and front-office staff.
The 2018 Edition, the 2024 Climate Amendment, and the 2025 Confirmation
The 2018 edition is the only edition. ISO published it in December 2018 through ISO/TC 228, the committee for tourism and related services.
A climate amendment was added in 2024. Like other management system standards, the standard now asks you to decide whether climate change is a relevant issue for your property. It also notes that interested parties, such as corporate buyers, may have climate-related requirements. Auditors check both points.
ISO confirmed the standard in June 2025. After its systematic review, the 2018 edition stays current with no revision under way. Your certificate is based on a stable standard.

What is ISO 21401 certification?
ISO 21401 certification is independent confirmation that a hotel or other accommodation runs a sustainability management system that meets the standard. It covers environmental, social and economic performance, from energy and water to staff, guests and the local community.
What is the current version of ISO 21401?
ISO 21401:2018, published in December 2018, is the only edition. Amendment 1, published in 2024, added climate change to the context clauses. ISO confirmed the standard in June 2025, so no new edition is planned for now.
Which properties can be certified?
Any accommodation establishment, of any size or type. That includes hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, hostels, guesthouses, campsites and holiday parks.
What does ISO 21401 cover?
It covers three areas. Environmental topics include energy, water, waste and biodiversity. Social topics include human rights, health and safety, and the local community. Economic topics include responsible purchasing and local economic development.
Does the standard cover restaurants, spas and events in the hotel?
Yes, when they are part of the establishment and inside the scope you define. Services run by outside operators are covered through how you select and manage suppliers.
Is ISO 21401 the same as ISO 14001?
No. ISO 14001 covers environmental management only. ISO 21401 is written for accommodation and adds social and economic requirements, such as staff welfare, guest health and safety, and local purchasing.
Is ISO 21401 the same as a GSTC certification?
No. GSTC certifications are issued by certification bodies accredited under the Global Sustainable Tourism Council's own program. ISO 21401 is an ISO management system standard. Accredify Global does not issue GSTC certificates.
Can a hotel group get one certificate for several properties?
Yes. Properties that run the same system can share one multi-site certificate. The certification body audits a sample of properties and the central function every time.
Do auditors stay at the hotel or talk to guests?
Auditors visit back-of-house areas, review records and interview staff. They may observe guest-facing areas and information, but they do not need to interview guests.
Does the standard require carbon reporting?
The standard does not set a reporting format. Since the 2024 amendment, you must decide whether climate change is relevant. Most hotels then monitor energy use and related emissions as part of their objectives.
Can sustainability certification be combined with ISO 22000 or ISO 45001?
Yes. A hotel can be audited for sustainability, food safety and occupational health and safety together, which saves time for operations teams.
How long does ISO 21401 certification take?
Most properties with a working sustainability program certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Hotel groups, several countries or a new system take longer.
