"CMMI certification" usually means an organization has been appraised against the Capability Maturity Model Integration and awarded a maturity level, such as Maturity Level 3. Is There a CMMI Certification? How Appraisals and Ratings Actually Work
CMMI ratings come from appraisals, not certificates. CMMI is owned by ISACA through the CMMI Institute, and V3.0 is the current model. Every appraisal must be led by a CMMI Certified Lead Appraiser, who works with an appraisal team to examine evidence and interview staff.
A Benchmark appraisal produces a maturity level rating valid for three years. A smaller Sustainment appraisal can extend it by two years, up to three times in a row. An Evaluation appraisal is an informal check with no rating. Organizations sometimes receive a "CMMI certificate" document, but what customers verify is the published appraisal result.
