ISO Certification in New Zealand: Accredited Audits for Food Exporters, SaaS Firms, Builders, and Government Suppliers
ISO certification in New Zealand gives dairy, meat, and horticulture exporters audited food safety for overseas buyers. It helps software firms clear enterprise security reviews and supports builders and suppliers bidding on GETS. Accredify Global audits New Zealand organizations against ISO 22000, ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and more.
What ISO Certification in New Zealand Gives Buyers and Agencies
ISO certification in New Zealand is a finding by an accredited certification body that your management system meets an international standard and is used every day. Auditors check records, speak with staff, and visit processing plants, pack houses, offices, or construction sites. A conforming system receives a three-year certificate, confirmed by a surveillance audit each year.
Primary exports shape much of the demand. Dairy and meat processors in Waikato, Canterbury, and Southland, kiwifruit pack houses around Tauranga, and wineries in Marlborough and Hawke's Bay sell to buyers in China, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Europe. Those buyers want proof of food safety and consistent quality on top of official export assurances.
Software is the second big driver. SaaS, fintech, and agritech companies in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch sell mostly offshore. Enterprise customers in Australia, North America, and Europe send security questionnaires before signing. An ISO 27001 certificate shortens those reviews.
Construction and infrastructure follow. Builders, civil contractors, and their subcontractors work under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, which places duties on every person conducting a business or undertaking. ISO 45001 gives that duty a working system with clear records.
Government suppliers complete the picture. Public agencies advertise many contracts on the Government Electronic Tenders Service, known as GETS. Bid evaluators look for evidence of quality, security, and environmental control, and a certified system provides it.
Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is listed in its directory. In New Zealand, International Accreditation New Zealand and JAS-ANZ accredit conformity bodies, and Standards New Zealand publishes national standards. If a tender or buyer names one of them, send us the wording before booking and we will confirm the fit.
New Zealand Rules in 2026 That Shape Certification Requests
Privacy breaches must be reported. The Privacy Act 2020 took effect on 1 December 2020 and is overseen by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. Agencies must notify the Commissioner and affected people as soon as practicable when a breach causes, or is likely to cause, serious harm. The Office expects notice within 72 hours. Failing to notify can lead to a fine of up to NZ$10,000.
A new notice duty started in May. The Privacy Amendment Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 23 September 2025. It added Information Privacy Principle 3A, in force from 1 May 2026. Agencies that collect personal information from someone other than the individual must now, in most cases, tell that person.
Biometric systems have their own code. The Biometric Processing Privacy Code 2025 came into force on 3 November 2025. Organizations already using biometrics had until 3 August 2026 to comply. Facial recognition, fingerprint access, and voice systems now need documented proportionality and safeguards.
Europe still recognizes New Zealand privacy law. The European Commission confirmed New Zealand's adequacy status in a review finalized on 15 January 2024. Personal data can keep flowing from the EU without extra transfer contracts, which matters to exporters and software firms.

Standards New Zealand Buyers Ask For
Export contracts, vendor reviews, and tender forms differ, yet these pairings appear most often.
| Sector | What the buyer worries about | Usual standards |
|---|---|---|
| Dairy and meat processors | Food safety, traceability, and energy use | ISO 22000, ISO 14001, and ISO 50001 |
| Kiwifruit, apple, and avocado pack houses | Food safety and grading consistency | ISO 22000 and ISO 9001 |
| Wineries and beverage producers | Hygiene, water, and waste | ISO 22000, ISO 14001, and HACCP |
| SaaS, fintech, and agritech companies | Customer data and offshore enterprise reviews | ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 |
| IT managed service providers to agencies | Service levels, security, and continuity | ISO 27001, ISO 20000-1, and ISO 22301 |
| Builders and civil contractors | Health and safety duties and project quality | ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 |
| Medical device manufacturers | Device quality for export markets | ISO 13485 |
| AI product companies | Responsible AI for enterprise buyers | ISO 42001 |
Food control plans, risk management programmes, and official export assurances from the Ministry for Primary Industries are separate. ISO 22000 supports them but never replaces them.
Food exporters often run several linked sites. A kiwifruit business might grade fruit at a Bay of Plenty pack house, store it in a coolstore near the Port of Tauranga, and sell from an Auckland office. One food safety and quality system can cover all three. Auditors sample sites across the cycle and plan the pack house visit for harvest, when the real work is running. Buyers then see one consistent set of evidence for each season.
How ISO Supports New Zealand Requirements
A certificate is not a licence or a registration. It is the system that keeps controls working between buyer, agency, and regulator reviews.
| Rule or system | Who it reaches | How ISO supports it |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy Act 2020 and notifiable breaches | Every agency that holds personal information | ISO 27701 runs privacy duties; ISO 27001 protects the data |
| IPP 3A indirect collection notices | Agencies collecting data from third parties | ISO 27701 records sources and notices for each processing activity |
| Biometric Processing Privacy Code 2025 | Organizations using biometric systems | ISO 27701 and ISO 42001 document assessments and safeguards |
| Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 | Every person conducting a business or undertaking | ISO 45001 manages risks, worker participation, and contractor controls |
| Food Act 2014 and Animal Products Act 1999 | Food businesses and export processors | ISO 22000 strengthens the food safety system behind MPI programmes |
| Government tenders on GETS | Suppliers to central and local government | ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001 support bid evaluation |
Some needs call for testing or attestation rather than certification. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. SaaS firms with US customers can add SOC 2 support, with reports signed by a licensed CPA partner firm. Exporters handling European customer data can review GDPR duties through our compliance services.

FAQ: ISO Certification in New Zealand
Answers on food exports, the Privacy Act, health and safety, GETS, cost, and timing.
How do I get ISO certification in New Zealand?
Choose the standard your buyer, client, or tender asks for. Run the system until it produces records, then book an audit. An accredited body completes Stage 1 and Stage 2 and issues a three-year certificate when you conform.
How long does ISO certification take in New Zealand?
With a working system, most organizations certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. Sites on both islands, extra standards, or a new system add time.
How much does ISO certification cost in New Zealand?
There is no fixed price. The fee follows the audit man-days your scope needs, driven by headcount, sites, risk, and standards.
Is Accredify Global accredited?

Do New Zealand buyers accept a UAF-accredited certificate?
Many accept accredited certificates from bodies in the international arrangement. Some contracts name JAS-ANZ or IANZ, so share the clause with us before booking.
Does ISO 22000 replace an MPI food control plan or risk management programme?
No. Those are legal requirements under the Food Act 2014 and the Animal Products Act 1999. ISO 22000 strengthens the system behind them.
When must a privacy breach be reported in New Zealand?
As soon as practicable once you know it has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm. The Privacy Commissioner expects notice within 72 hours.
What is IPP 3A?
A principle added by the Privacy Amendment Act 2025. Since 1 May 2026, agencies collecting personal information indirectly must usually tell the person concerned.
Does the biometric code affect us?
It applies if you use biometrics such as facial recognition or fingerprint access. The code took effect on 3 November 2025, and existing systems had until 3 August 2026.
Does ISO 27701 help with the Privacy Act 2020?
Yes. It adds privacy roles, processing records, request handling, and breach response to an ISO 27001 system.
Does ISO 45001 help with the Health and Safety at Work Act?
Yes. It organizes risk assessment, worker participation, and contractor management, which are core duties for every business under the Act.
Should a Wellington SaaS company pick ISO 27001 or SOC 2?
Customers in New Zealand, Australia, and Europe usually ask for ISO 27001. US customers often ask for SOC 2. Many firms map one control set to both.
Can you audit a pack house during the kiwifruit harvest?
Yes. We schedule the site visit for harvest so auditors see grading and packing at full speed.
Can any of the audit be remote?
Document review and some interviews can be remote where accreditation rules allow. Plants, pack houses, and project sites are audited in person.
Will Accredify Global build our management system?
No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your team or an independent consultant designs the system.
