What ISO Certification for Banking Covers

ISO certification for banking and financial services is an independent audit against ISO standards. It checks how a bank, insurer, or fintech manages information security, continuity, privacy, and integrity. Most start with ISO 27001. Firms with critical services add ISO 22301, and those holding customer data add ISO 27701. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.

Finance is also heavily regulated, and no ISO certificate replaces a regulator. DORA applies in the EU, NYDFS Part 500 in New York, and PCI DSS wherever cards are processed. Supervisors still examine you against the rules; certification gives them structured evidence to start from.

Accredify Global is an accredited certification body. We certify the ISO systems underneath these rules and assess your readiness for the rest. Each exam or partner review then starts from evidence you already hold.

Financial Sector Rules in 2026: DORA, PCI DSS v4.0.1, and US Cybersecurity Rules

DORA has applied since 17 January 2025. EU financial entities must run an ICT risk framework, report major incidents, test resilience, and keep a register of ICT third parties. In November 2025 the first critical ICT providers were designated for direct EU oversight.

PCI DSS v4.0.1 is fully in force. The future-dated requirements became mandatory on 31 March 2025. They include stronger authentication, targeted risk analyses, and protection of payment pages against script attacks.

US rules have tightened too. The final phase of the amended NYDFS Part 500, including wider multi-factor authentication and asset inventories, took effect on 1 November 2025. SEC Regulation S-P amendments applied to larger firms from 3 December 2025 and smaller firms from 3 June 2026. The FFIEC retired its Cybersecurity Assessment Tool on 31 August 2025.

The difference

ISO 27001 vs Financial Regulations: How They Fit

One well-run security system can supply evidence for many rules. None of them accepts a certificate alone.

RegulationWhat it adds beyond ISO 27001Where ISO helps most
DORAIncident reporting deadlines, resilience testing, and the ICT third-party registerISO 27001 risk process and ISO 22301 continuity
NYDFS Part 500CISO role, annual compliance filing, and specific MFA rulesAccess control, asset inventory, and risk assessment
PCI DSSPrescriptive card data controls and validation by a QSA or self-assessmentScope control, logging, and vulnerability management
SEC Regulation S-PCustomer breach notification and service provider oversightIncident response and supplier security
GLBA Safeguards RuleA written information security program for customer dataThe ISMS itself, with documented controls
EU AI ActRules for high-risk AI such as credit scoringISO 42001 for AI governance

ISO 31000 is often mentioned in financial risk policies, but it is guidance and cannot be certified. The certifiable route is to show risk control through ISO 27001 and ISO 22301.

On the audit

What a Financial Services Audit Checks

We follow real access requests, incidents, changes, and vendor reviews.

Areas we test

  • Privileged access and joiner, mover, leaver processes
  • Vendor due diligence and cloud contracts
  • Incident detection, response, and reporting
  • Continuity tests for critical services
  • Change management for core systems
  • Encryption and key management
  • Data retention and customer privacy rights

Common gaps we find

  • Access reviews signed off without changes
  • Critical vendors with no exit plan
  • Recovery times assumed, not tested
  • Risk register not linked to controls
  • Shadow IT outside the security scope

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification for Banking and Financial Services

Straight answers on DORA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, US rules, cost, and timeline.

Which ISO certification do banks and financial firms need?

Most start with ISO 27001 for information security. Firms that must keep services running add ISO 22301, and those handling personal data add ISO 27701. Firms with bribery exposure add ISO 37001.

Does ISO 27001 satisfy DORA?

No single certificate satisfies DORA. ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 cover much of its ICT risk and continuity ground. DORA also requires incident reporting, resilience testing and a register of ICT third parties.

Is there a DORA certification?

No. DORA compliance is shown through evidence, supervision and contracts, not a certificate. We run DORA readiness assessments and certify the ISO standards that support it.

Does Accredify Global perform PCI DSS assessments?

No. We are not a Qualified Security Assessor or an Approved Scanning Vendor. We run PCI DSS v4.0.1 readiness assessments and prepare evidence for your QSA or self-assessment.

Is SOC 2 a certification?

No. SOC 2 is an attestation report issued by an independent CPA firm. We help organizations prepare for a SOC 2 examination; the CPA firm issues the report.

What replaced the FFIEC Cybersecurity Assessment Tool?

The FFIEC retired the tool on 31 August 2025. It pointed institutions to frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0. ISO 27001 maps well to both.

Does ISO 27001 help with NYDFS Part 500?

Yes. Part 500 requires a cybersecurity program, risk assessments, access controls, multi-factor authentication and an asset inventory. ISO 27001 covers these areas, but the annual compliance filing with NYDFS remains your duty.

What changed in Regulation S-P?

SEC amendments require covered firms to have incident response programs and to notify affected customers of certain data breaches. Larger entities had to comply by 3 December 2025 and smaller ones by 3 June 2026.

Do fintech companies need ISO 27001?

Usually. Banks and payment partners ask fintechs for ISO 27001 or SOC 2 during due diligence. ISO 27001 gives an accredited certificate recognized worldwide.

Do banks need ISO 42001 for AI?

It is increasingly asked for. Banks use AI for credit, fraud and customer service, and the EU AI Act treats creditworthiness assessment as high risk. ISO 42001 certifies an AI management system.

Is ISO 31000 a certification?

No. ISO 31000 gives guidance on risk management and cannot be certified. Financial firms show risk control through certified systems such as ISO 27001 and ISO 22301.

How long does ISO certification take for a financial firm?

Most firms with a working management system certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Several countries, several standards or a new system take longer.

How much does ISO certification cost for banks and financial firms?

The cost follows the audit man-days your scope needs. Headcount, sites, services and the standards in scope set the man-days. A free scoping review gives you a tailored proposal.

Can ISO 27001, 22301 and 27701 be audited together?

Yes. They share the same structure and can be audited in one integrated audit, which saves time for security, risk and operations teams.

Does Accredify Global write our policies?

No. As a certification body we must stay impartial, so we audit and certify but do not write your system. Your team, or a consultant you choose, closes any gaps.
