What Is ISO 29993 Certification?
ISO 29993 certification is independent confirmation that a learning service provider (LSP) meets the 2017 edition of the standard. It focuses on the training service itself. The auditor checks what you tell prospective learners, how you analyze their needs, and how you design and deliver courses. They also check how you assess learning and evaluate whether the service worked.
The standard covers lifelong learning outside formal education, such as vocational courses, professional development, compliance training, and in-company programs. Schools, colleges, and universities in the formal system are outside its scope and usually choose ISO 21001.
The audit looks at real courses. We observe sessions or recordings, review learning materials and assessments, and speak with trainers, learners, and sponsors.
The 2017 Edition and How It Replaced ISO 29990
The 2017 edition is current. ISO published it in August 2017 through ISO/TC 232, its education and learning services committee. It was reviewed and confirmed in 2023, with no revision under way.
It took over half of ISO 29990. The older standard mixed service and management requirements. ISO split them, so this standard covers the learning service, and ISO 21001 covers the management system of an educational organization.
It is a service standard, not a management system. There are no clauses on policy, internal audit, or management review. Providers who want those too add ISO 21001 or ISO 9001.

Two clauses surprise many providers. Clause 11 treats facilitators separately from other staff, because a freelance trainer delivering one module still shapes the learner's experience. Clause 14 covers invoicing, which few quality standards mention. Sponsors value both: they want to know who is actually teaching their people, and that the bill matches the training they agreed to buy.
