What Is ISO 50001 Certification?
ISO 50001 certification is independent confirmation that an organization runs an energy management system (EnMS) that meets ISO 50001:2018. An accredited certification body audits the system in two stages. Unlike most ISO standards, it must also see proof that your energy performance has improved.

ISO 50001 and the EU Energy Efficiency Directive: 2026 and 2027 Deadlines
For large EU energy users, a certified energy management system is becoming a legal duty. Directive (EU) 2023/1791 sets two thresholds. Enterprises using more than 85 TJ of energy a year must run an energy management system certified by an independent body by 11 October 2027. Enterprises using more than 10 TJ must run one or carry out an energy audit. The first audit is due by 11 October 2026, then every four years.
ISO 50001 is the standard most organizations use to meet the energy management route. National laws set the details, so check how your Member State applies it. The standard itself is stable: ISO 50001:2018 was confirmed in 2024, and a 2024 amendment added climate change to the context of the system.

ISO 50001 uses the same structure as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Clause 6 holds the energy planning core.
