What ISO Certification in Sri Lanka Proves to Buyers

ISO certification in Sri Lanka is independent confirmation, from an accredited certification body, that your management system meets an international standard and is part of real work. Auditors read your records, talk to your teams, and see production, processing, or service delivery for themselves. A conforming system earns a certificate valid for three years, with a surveillance audit each year.

Apparel is the country's largest export industry, worth about US$4.9 billion in 2025. Its customers are global brands that expect consistent quality, controlled chemicals and wastewater, and safe workplaces. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 give them an audited base on which their own programs can sit.

Tea, spices, coconut products, and seafood follow close behind. Retailers and importers want food safety evidence before they list a product, and ISO 22000 is a widely recognized way to give it. It works alongside HACCP and the buyer's own specifications.

Data protection is now operational. The core duties of the Personal Data Protection Act came into force on 18 March 2025, so banks, BPO firms, and software companies face privacy questions in every client review. ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 answer many of them with audited evidence.

The IT and BPO sector is growing fast around Colombo. Clients in Europe, Australia, and the United States expect ISO 27001 before they share customer data, and they increasingly ask about privacy and continuity as well.

Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is published in its directory. If a buyer, tender, or regulator names a specific accreditation body, share the wording and we will check it before you book.

Where things stand

Sri Lankan Rules in 2026 That Shape Certification Requests

The core of the data protection law is live. The Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022 came into force in stages. Parts I, II, III, and VII, which hold the main processing duties and data subject rights, took effect on 18 March 2025. The Data Protection Authority can fine up to LKR 10 million for each breach of the law.

Banks follow a technology risk direction. Banking Act Directions No. 16 of 2021, issued in December 2021, set the Central Bank's framework on technology risk management and resilience for licensed banks. It requires board oversight and annual internal audit reporting, and reaches third-party service providers.

Exporters face buyer-driven standards. Apparel exports reached about US$4.9 billion in 2025, a 5.2% rise on the year before. Global brands, not local law, set most certification expectations in this sector.

Apparel groups often run several plants across the Western, Central, and Southern provinces under one head office. One integrated system for quality, environment, and safety lets a group certify every plant together, with audits sampling the plants each year. The brands see one set of procedures, and plant managers stop rebuilding evidence for each customer visit. Groups that run wet processing also find ISO 50001 useful, because energy is one of their largest controllable costs.

How ISO Supports Sri Lankan Requirements

A certificate is not a licence. It is the system that keeps controls working between client audits and regulator reviews.

Rule or systemWho it reachesHow ISO supports it
Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022Controllers and processors of personal dataISO 27701 runs privacy duties; ISO 27001 secures the data
CBSL technology risk direction (No. 16 of 2021)Licensed banks and their service providersISO 27001 and ISO 22301 support governance and resilience
Brand supplier codes of conductApparel and textile exportersISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 give an audited base
Food export buyer specificationsTea, spice, and food exportersISO 22000 shows a managed food safety system

Some needs call for testing rather than certification. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. IT firms serving US clients can add SOC 2 support, and our compliance services cover wider privacy and resilience work, including GDPR for European clients. Tea exporters should also keep buyer specifications and pesticide residue testing current, because ISO 22000 manages those checks but does not replace them.

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification in Sri Lanka

Answers on apparel, food exports, the PDPA, cost, and timing.

How do I get ISO certification in Sri Lanka?

Choose the standard your buyer, client, or tender expects, run the system until it produces records, then book an audit. An accredited body carries out Stage 1 and Stage 2 and issues a three-year certificate if you conform.

How long does ISO certification take in Sri Lanka?

With a working system, most organizations certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. Several plants, standards, or a new system take longer.

How much does ISO certification cost in Sri Lanka?

There is no fixed price. The fee follows the audit man-days your scope needs, driven by headcount, sites, risk, and standards.

Is Accredify Global accredited?

Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001.

Will buyers accept a UAF-accredited certificate?

Most accept accredited certificates from bodies in the international arrangement. If a buyer names a particular accreditation body, share that requirement before booking.

When did Sri Lanka's data protection law start applying?

Parts of the Act began earlier, but the core processing duties and data subject rights took effect on 18 March 2025.

Does ISO 27701 help with the Personal Data Protection Act?

Yes. It adds privacy roles, records of processing, rights handling, and breach response to an ISO 27001 system.

Does ISO 27001 help banks with the CBSL technology risk direction?

Yes. It provides the governance, risk assessment, and audit cycle that the direction expects boards to oversee.

Do tea exporters need ISO 22000?

It depends on the buyer. Many retailers and importers ask for ISO 22000 or an equivalent food safety system before listing a product.

Can apparel groups certify several plants together?

Yes. A multi-site certificate covers plants that share one management system, and audits sample them each year.

Can you audit factories in BOI zones?

Yes. Tell us early so zone access is arranged before the audit dates.

Can parts of the audit be remote?

Document review and some interviews can be remote where the rules allow. Production and processing areas are audited in person.

Which standard should an apparel factory start with?

Most start with ISO 9001, then add ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 as brands ask. Many certify all three in one integrated audit.

Should IT firms choose ISO 27001 or SOC 2?

European and Asian clients usually ask for ISO 27001. US clients often ask for SOC 2. Many firms use one control set for both.

Will Accredify Global prepare our documents?

No. Certification bodies must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
