Why Irish Companies Seek ISO Certification

ISO certification in Ireland means an accredited certification body has checked, on site and in your records, that your management system meets a published international standard. The audit team reviews procedures, samples evidence, talks to staff, and walks the clean rooms, plants, offices, or farms in scope. If the system conforms, you receive a certificate valid for three years, confirmed by a surveillance visit each year.

Life sciences set the tone. Cork Harbour, Ringaskiddy, Limerick, and Waterford host large pharmaceutical plants, and Galway is a well-known medtech cluster. Global manufacturers there buy components, sterilization, packaging, calibration, and logistics from Irish subcontractors. Their supplier quality teams usually ask for ISO 9001 at a minimum and ISO 13485 for device work.

Dublin is the European base for many software, cloud, and social media groups. That ecosystem pulls in payroll providers, managed IT firms, data centre operators, and SaaS start-ups. Their customers send long security questionnaires, and ISO 27001 is often the fastest credible answer.

Agri-food is the oldest export story. Dairy processors, meat plants, and drinks producers ship to retailers across Europe, the UK, and beyond. Many already sit inside Bord Bia sustainability programs, and they add ISO 22000, ISO 14001, or ISO 50001 when a buyer or a carbon target demands it.

Construction, facilities, and transport contractors make up the fourth group. State bodies publish their tenders on eTenders, and selection criteria often ask how quality, safety, and environmental risks are controlled.

Accredify Global holds UAF accreditation, and our scope can be checked in the UAF directory. Ireland's national accreditation body is INAB, and its national standards body is NSAI. If a tender or customer contract names INAB or any other specific body, send us the wording before you book and we will confirm whether our certificate fits.

Irish Rules in 2026 That Drive Certification

The DPC is one of Europe's busiest regulators. GDPR applies directly, and the Data Protection Act 2018 adds Irish detail. Notifiable breaches go to the Data Protection Commission within 72 hours. The DPC's 2025 annual report, published on 30 June 2026, recorded 6,521 valid breach notifications and over €530 million in fines from four large inquiries.

NIS2 is still awaiting an Irish law. The General Scheme of the National Cyber Security Bill was published on 30 August 2024. It proposes nine sector authorities, led by the National Cyber Security Centre. Ireland missed the October 2024 deadline, and in July 2026 the European Commission referred it to the EU Court of Justice. Until the Act passes, the 2018 NIS regulations still apply to existing operators.

AI and sustainability rules are arriving in parallel. The General Scheme of the Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2026 was published on 4 February 2026. It plans an AI Office of Ireland working with sector regulators. Separately, S.I. No. 336 of 2024 brought the EU sustainability reporting directive into Irish law in July 2024, with IAASA as a key supervisor.

Standards Irish Customers and Tenders Request

Supplier questionnaires differ by industry. These pairings come up most often in Irish scoping calls.

SectorWhat the buyer worries aboutUsual standards
Medtech component makers and contract manufacturersDevice quality for OEM customersISO 13485 and ISO 9001
Pharma service suppliers in Cork and LimerickSupplier qualification and site safetyISO 9001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001
SaaS, fintech, and managed IT firms in DublinClient security reviews and privacyISO 27001 and ISO 27701
Data centre operators and colocation suppliersUptime, energy use, and service controlISO 27001, ISO 50001, and ISO 20000-1
Dairy, meat, and drinks processorsFood safety and retailer requirementsISO 22000 and ISO 14001
Contractors on public works and facilities frameworksSafety, quality, and environment in tendersISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001
Aircraft leasing, funds, and insurance service firmsResilience and outsourcing oversightISO 27001 and ISO 22301

ISO 13485 supports EU device regulation but is not a CE mark. Device conformity assessment is done by a notified body, which Accredify Global is not.

A typical Irish request comes from a subcontractor serving a medtech plant in Galway or a pharma site in Cork Harbour. The customer's supplier quality team sends a questionnaire and an approved supplier agreement. Both ask whether the quality system is certified and by whom. A machining shop, sterilization provider, or cleanroom laundry can answer with ISO 13485 or ISO 9001, then add ISO 14001 once the customer starts collecting environmental data for its own sustainability report. One integrated audit plan keeps those certificates aligned with the same records.

How ISO Maps to Irish Obligations

Certification does not replace a licence, an inspection, or a regulator's decision. It gives you a tested system that keeps the controls working between reviews.

Rule or systemWho it reachesHow ISO supports it
GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018Every controller and processor in IrelandISO 27701 structures privacy duties; ISO 27001 protects the data
National Cyber Security Bill (NIS2, pending)Essential and important entities across 18 sectorsISO 27001 supports risk management, supplier security, and incident reporting
DORA, supervised by the Central Bank of IrelandBanks, insurers, funds, and their ICT providersISO 27001 and ISO 22301 support ICT risk and continuity evidence
Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005All employers, enforced by the Health and Safety AuthorityISO 45001 builds on the written safety statement
EPA industrial and waste licencesLicensed plants and waste operatorsISO 14001 and ISO 50001 support monitoring and improvement
Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Bill 2026 (proposed)Providers and deployers of AI systemsISO 42001 sets up AI governance and risk controls

Some obligations need testing or a separate assessment rather than a management system certificate. Our VAPT services and cyber security risk assessment report against recognized frameworks. Our NIS2 readiness and DORA readiness pages explain how gap reviews work, and our GDPR services cover privacy programs. Irish SaaS firms selling into the US often add SOC 2, which is signed by a licensed CPA partner firm.

Planning the audit

Planning an ISO Audit in Ireland

Irish calendar and paperwork points that keep the audit on track.

Have these ready before Stage 1

  • CRO number and registered name for each company
  • Revenue tax or VAT number for invoicing
  • Plants, cleanrooms, offices, and remote staff in scope
  • The customer agreement or eTenders clause
  • Outsourced processes, such as sterilization or hosting

Calendar notes

  • Offices work Monday to Friday
  • Ten public holidays, including St Brigid's Day in February
  • St Patrick's Day on 17 March is busy for travel
  • Plant shutdowns often fall in late July, August, or Christmas week
  • Audits and records are in English; Irish-language documents are fine to show

Common questions

FAQ: ISO Certification in Ireland

Answers on medtech, the DPC, NIS2, eTenders, cost, and timing.

What steps lead to ISO certification in Ireland?

Pick the standard your customer or tender names and operate it long enough to produce records. Then book Stage 1 and Stage 2 with an accredited body. A conforming system earns a three-year certificate.

How long does ISO certification take for an Irish company?

Teams with a working system often certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. Multi-site groups and brand-new systems usually need longer.

What does ISO certification cost in Ireland?

There is no fixed price list. Each proposal is built from the man-days your scope needs, based on headcount, sites, risk, and standards.

Is Accredify Global accredited?

Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, including ISO 13485, ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 42001.

Our customer contract mentions INAB. Can we still use you?

It depends on the exact wording. Some contracts accept any IAF MLA accreditation, while others name INAB only. Send us the clause and we will confirm before you book.

Does ISO 13485 give us a CE mark for a device?

No. ISO 13485 certifies your quality system. CE marking under EU device rules needs a notified body for most classes, and Accredify Global is not one.

How quickly must a breach be reported to the Data Protection Commission?

Notifiable breaches must reach the DPC within 72 hours of the organization becoming aware. The DPC logged 6,521 valid notifications in 2025.

Has Ireland passed its NIS2 law yet?

Not as of mid-2026. The General Scheme of the National Cyber Security Bill was published in August 2024. The European Commission referred Ireland to the EU Court of Justice in July 2026.

Who will supervise NIS2 in Ireland?

The General Scheme proposes nine authorities. The National Cyber Security Centre leads, with bodies such as the Central Bank, ComReg, and the CRU covering their own sectors.

Do Irish public tenders on eTenders ask for ISO certificates?

Many works, facilities, and services tenders ask how quality, safety, and environmental risks are managed. A certificate is a strong answer, but read each tender for its exact wording.

Does ISO 42001 help with the Irish AI Bill?

It gives you AI governance, risk assessment, and monitoring. The AI Bill 2026 general scheme plans an AI Office of Ireland to coordinate sector regulators.

Can the audit be partly remote?

Document review and some interviews can be remote where accreditation rules allow. Cleanrooms, plants, and data centres are audited in person.

Will St Brigid's Day or August shutdowns delay our audit?

They can. We avoid public holidays and plant shutdown weeks when setting dates, so tell us your production calendar early.

Can one certificate cover our Irish plant and a Northern Ireland site?

Yes, if both sites run one management system under the same organization. Each address is listed on the certificate.

Can Accredify Global write our procedures?

No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we only audit and certify. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
