What ISO Certification for Telecom Covers
ISO certification for telecom companies is an independent audit against ISO standards. It checks how an operator or supplier manages security, continuity, service, and quality. Most start with ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. Operators add ISO 22301 and ISO/IEC 20000-1, and equipment suppliers are often asked for TL 9000. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.
Telecom also has its own rules. NIS2 applies to public electronic communications providers in the EU. The UK has a dedicated telecom security law and code of practice. Many large carriers ask suppliers for TL 9000, issued only by certification bodies registered under that program.

Telecom Standards in 2026: ISO 27701:2025, ISO 9001:2026, and Security Rules
ISO/IEC 27701:2025 is now a standalone privacy standard. Published in October 2025, it no longer needs an ISO 27001 certificate underneath it. Holders of 2019 certificates have a transition period expected to run to around October 2028.
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. New certifications must use the 2026 edition from 31 March 2028, and 2015 certificates must transition by 30 September 2029. TL 9000 builds on ISO 9001, so suppliers should watch for a matching update.
Security rules keep tightening. NIS2 covers EU public electronic communications providers. In the UK, a revised Telecommunications Security Code of Practice was published on 14 July 2026. ISO/IEC 27011:2024 gives telecom-specific guidance on security controls.

Which ISO certification do telecom companies need?

What is TL 9000?
TL 9000 is the quality management standard for the information and communications technology industry, run by the TIA QuEST Forum. It adds telecom requirements and performance measurements to ISO 9001. Release 6.3 took effect in October 2021 and is the current version.

What is ISO/IEC 27011?

Does ISO 27001 help with NIS2 for telecom operators?
Yes. Providers of public electronic communications networks and services are in scope of NIS2. ISO 27001 covers most of its risk management measures, but NIS2 also has reporting duties and management accountability that need separate checks.
What are the UK telecom security rules?
UK public telecom providers must meet the Telecommunications (Security) Act 2021 and the 2022 security measures regulations. The Code of Practice, revised in July 2026, sets recommended timeframes by provider tier. Ofcom monitors compliance.
What changed in ISO 27701 for telecom companies?

Yes. Sites that run the same management system can share one multi-site certificate. The certification body audits a sample of sites and the central function every time.
