What ISO Certification in Japan Means for Customers and Partners
ISO certification in Japan is an accredited certification body's independent confirmation that your management system meets an international standard and is part of daily work, not only the manual. Auditors check records, interview staff and section heads, and observe work on the line, in the lab, or at the desk. A conforming system earns a three-year certificate, maintained by an annual surveillance audit.
Manufacturing still drives most requests. Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto suppliers around Nagoya, Toyota City, and Hamamatsu work to strict customer quality manuals. ISO 9001 is the usual base, and ISO 14001 is common because large manufacturers ask suppliers about environmental management and carbon data.
Semiconductors have brought new investment. The fab cluster around Kikuyo in Kumamoto and the Rapidus project in Chitose, Hokkaido, pull in materials, equipment, and service suppliers. Many of them are new to Japan and need certificates their customers will accept from the first purchase order.
Tokyo and Osaka add services. Software houses, system integrators, and cloud providers serve banks, insurers, and public bodies that run detailed vendor checks. In Japan, ISO 27001 is often called ISMS certification, and it sits alongside the domestic PrivacyMark scheme in many tenders.
Japanese groups also certify abroad. A company with plants in Thailand, Vietnam, or Mexico often wants one system and one certificate across sites. We audit in 71 countries, which helps keep overseas plants on the same cycle as the head office.
Accredify Global is accredited by UAF, and our scope is listed in its directory. If a customer or tender names JAB, ISMS-AC, or another specific accreditation body, share the wording before you book and we will confirm the fit.
Japanese Rules in 2026 That Shape Certification Requests
Personal data rules carry reporting duties. The Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is enforced by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC). Since the amended act took full effect on 1 April 2022, qualifying leaks must be reported. A preliminary report goes in promptly, and a final report follows within 30 days, or 60 days for leaks caused by malicious acts.
Penalties are higher for companies. A company that breaks a PPC order, or wrongfully provides a personal information database, faces a fine of up to JPY 100 million. Affected individuals must also be told about qualifying leaks, in most cases.
Cloud and financial vendors face sector checks. Cloud services sold to central government must be registered under ISMAP, whose control criteria draw on ISO/IEC 27001, 27002, and 27017. Banks and insurers often apply the FISC Security Guidelines to their system vendors as well.
Food hygiene and disclosure rules have tightened. Since June 2021, the amended Food Sanitation Act has required HACCP-based hygiene control for food businesses. In March 2025, the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) published national disclosure standards, which are being phased in for large listed companies.

Standards Japanese Customers Ask For
Purchasing manuals vary by customer, but these combinations come up most often in Japan.
| Sector | What the buyer worries about | Usual standards |
|---|---|---|
| Auto parts suppliers in Aichi and Shizuoka | Customer quality manuals and supplier audits | ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 |
| Semiconductor materials and equipment suppliers | New-customer approval and site safety | ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 |
| Medical device makers and component suppliers | Device quality for Japan and export markets | ISO 13485 |
| System integrators and software houses | ISMS requirements in client contracts | ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 |
| Data centers and managed service providers | Service levels and continuity | ISO 27001, ISO 20000-1, and ISO 22301 |
| Food manufacturers and exporters | Food safety beyond basic HACCP | ISO 22000 |
| Chemical and steel plants | Energy cost and environmental control | ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 |
| AI developers and platform providers | Responsible AI for enterprise buyers | ISO 42001 |
PrivacyMark, run by JIPDEC, is a separate Japanese scheme based on JIS Q 15001. ISO 27701 covers similar ground for international clients but does not replace it.
Suppliers gain most when the certificate follows the way the company really works. A Hamamatsu parts maker might run machining and assembly in Shizuoka, a plant in Thailand, and a sales office in Nagoya. One ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 system can cover all three, with sites sampled each year. The customer's purchasing team then reviews one set of evidence. Quality staff also stop rewriting the same answers in each customer's supplier survey.
How ISO Supports Japanese Requirements
A certificate is not a licence or a ministry approval. It is the system that keeps controls working between customer audits and official inspections.
| Rule or system | Who it reaches | How ISO supports it |
|---|---|---|
| Act on the Protection of Personal Information | Businesses handling personal information | ISO 27701 runs privacy duties; ISO 27001 secures the data |
| ISMAP | Cloud services sold to central government | ISO 27001 controls support the ISMAP assessment |
| FISC Security Guidelines | Banks, insurers, and their system vendors | ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 give vendors audited answers |
| QMS Ministerial Ordinance (MHLW) | Medical device manufacturers | ISO 13485 aligns with the ordinance's quality system |
| Food Sanitation Act | Food businesses required to run HACCP-based control | ISO 22000 builds a full system on top of HACCP |
| Industrial Safety and Health Act | Employers with plants and construction sites | ISO 45001 structures risk assessment and worker participation |

FAQ: ISO Certification in Japan
Answers on the APPI, ISMS, PrivacyMark, JAB, cost, and timing.
How do I get ISO certification in Japan?
Choose the standard your customer or tender names, run the system until it produces records, then book an audit. An accredited body completes Stage 1 and Stage 2 and issues a three-year certificate if you conform.
How long does ISO certification take in Japan?
With a working system, most organizations certify 6 to 12 weeks after Stage 1. Overseas sites, several standards, or Golden Week and Obon add time.
How much does ISO certification cost in Japan?
There is no list price. The fee follows the audit man-days your scope needs, driven by headcount, sites, risk, and standards.
Is Accredify Global accredited?
Yes. UAF accredits Accredify Global for twelve standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 13485, ISO 27001, and ISO 27701.
Our customer asks for a JAB or ISMS-AC certificate. What now?
Send us the exact clause first. Some customers accept any accredited certificate from the international arrangement, and some name a Japanese body on purpose. We will tell you plainly which applies.
Is JIS Q 9001 the same as ISO 9001?
JIS Q 9001 is the Japanese Industrial Standard that adopts ISO 9001. JIS Q 14001, JIS Q 45001, and JIS Q 27001 adopt the matching ISO standards the same way.
What is the difference between ISMS certification and PrivacyMark?
ISMS certification is ISO 27001 and covers information security. PrivacyMark is a domestic scheme run by JIPDEC for personal information, based on JIS Q 15001.
Does ISO 27701 replace PrivacyMark?
No. They are separate schemes. Domestic tenders often ask for PrivacyMark, while international clients usually recognize ISO 27701.
How fast must a data leak be reported under the APPI?
A preliminary report goes to the PPC promptly. A final report is due within 30 days, or 60 days when the leak came from a malicious act.
Does ISO 27001 help with ISMAP registration?
Yes. ISMAP control criteria draw on ISO/IEC 27001, 27002, and 27017, so an ISMS gives a strong base. ISMAP still has its own audit and registration.
Does ISO 13485 meet the MHLW QMS ordinance?
The ordinance was revised to align with ISO 13485:2016, so one system can serve both. PMDA or registered bodies still run their own conformity inspections.
Can one certificate cover our plants in Japan and Thailand?
Yes, if all plants run one management system under the same organization. Each site is listed and sampled over the cycle.
Can audits be done in Japanese?
Records can stay in Japanese. We plan interpreting time into the audit days, which the proposal shows before you sign.
Can parts of the audit be remote?
Document review and some interviews can be remote where the rules allow. Plants, labs, and data centers are audited in person.
Will Accredify Global write our documents?
No. A certification body must stay impartial, so we audit and certify only. Your team or an independent consultant builds the system.
