What Is ISO 41001 Certification?
ISO 41001 certification is independent confirmation that a facility management (FM) system meets the 2018 edition of the standard. The auditor checks how you understand the needs of the demand organization, which is the business your services support. They then check how you coordinate stakeholders, integrate services, and measure results. A successful audit leads to a certificate valid for three years.
The standard applies to any organization, sector, or size. That includes outsourced FM providers, managing agents, and in-house estates teams running buildings for their own business.
That breadth is the point. A building's users rarely care which contractor fixed the lift or cleaned the floor. They care that the place works, is safe, and supports what they came to do. The standard asks you to manage FM from that angle, not contract by contract.
The audit looks at the help desk, the contracts, and a sample of the buildings you run. We check that what the system says happens actually happens on site.
The 2018 Edition and the Revision Now Under Way
The 2018 edition is the one you certify to. ISO published it in April 2018 as the first edition. Its full title is Facility management — Management systems — Requirements with guidance for use.
A 2024 amendment added climate change. Like other ISO management system standards, it now asks whether climate change is relevant to your organization and its facilities.
A second edition is on the way. The draft international standard closed its ballot on 30 June 2026. Certificates to the 2018 edition stay valid until the new edition is published and a transition period is announced.

Yes. Many facility services are delivered by subcontractors. The standard expects you to coordinate and control them, and auditors check how you select, brief and monitor them.
Does ISO 41001 still require preventive action?
Yes. Unusually for modern ISO management system standards, the 2018 edition keeps a clause on preventive actions, in clause 10.3.
How long does ISO 41001 certification take?
Most FM organizations with a working management system certify in 6 to 12 weeks from Stage 1 to the certificate. Many client sites or a new system take longer.
